Philippine Comics
Comics in the Philippines ( fil, Komiks}) have been widespread and popular throughout the country from the 1920s to the present. Komiks were partially inspired by American mainstream comic strips and comic books during the early 20th century. The medium first became widely popular after World War II. Its mainstream appeal subsided somewhat during the latter part of the 20th century with the advent of other mass-media forms such as telenovelas, but experienced a renaissance in the mid-2010s with the increasing popularity of artists such as Gerry Alanguilan, Arnold Arre, Budjette Tan, Kajo Baldisimo, and the rise of fan communities through comic book conventions such as komikon. Webcomics produced by independent Filipino web-based artists have caught the attention of local and foreign readers. Dyesebel
''Dyesebel'' () is a Filipino comic book character, conceived by Mars Ravelo and drawn by Elpidio Torres. Dyesebel is a mermaid, who eventually gains full human form through a deal with a sea-witch. Aside appearing in Pilipino Komiks, Dyesebel also appeared in Kampeon Komiks (Champion Comics) in 1975. The story has been adapted into five films and a spin-off, throughout the timeline from 1953 to 1996. Among those who took on the role in the big screen are Eva Montes, Edna Luna (1953), Vilma Santos (1973), Alma Moreno (1978), Alice Dixson (1990), and Charlene Gonzales (1996). On the television, the iconic mermaid is portrayed by Marian Rivera (2008) and Anne Curtis (2014). Barok
Barok is considered one of the most popular komiks characters in the Philippines created by Filipino cartoonist Bert Sarile in 1973. It also means Sillano. A stone-age Philippine comic book character, Barok was described by Sarile as a lead character and one of the equivalents in the Philippine comic book industry of the American cartoon characters in The Flintstones. Barok was illustrated in komiks by Sarile as a “pre-historic caveman” who carried a “large spiked club”. Comic book version Barok was featured weekly in the pages of ''Hiwaga Komiks''. ''Aso ni San Roque'' (International title: ''San Roque's Pet'' / ) is a Philippine television drama Fantasy (genre), fantasy series broadcast by GMA Network. Fred Carrillo
Wilfredo Limbana "Fred" Carrillo (1926–August 2005) was a Filipino comics artist. Biography Fred Carrillo was born in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. He began his career drawing propaganda material for the guerrilla movement in Panay during World War II. After the war, he began his career as a professional artist. Carrillo studied fine arts and architecture at the University of Santo Tomas. He worked for DC Comics in the 1970s and 1980s and drew mystery titles such as '' Ghosts'', ''Phantom Stranger'', ''Secrets of Haunted House'', '' The Unexpected'', ''Weird War Tales'', and '' The Witching Hour''. After leaving the comics industry, he worked on various animation projects. Panday (comics)
The Panday (Filipino for smith) is a fictional Philippine comics character created by writer Carlo J. Caparas and artist Steve Gan. His stories were first serialized in the comic series ''Ang Panday'' ("The Smith") in ''Pilipino Komiks'' during the late 1970s. The character, whose real name is Flavio, became a Philippine pop culture icon since it was adapted to film ('' Ang Panday)'' in 1980 with Fernando Poe Jr. portraying Flavio and Max Alvarado as his archenemy Lizardo. Federico C. Javinal is considered one of the “great achievers in Philippine Art”, particularly in the field of Philippine comics. Biography Javinal started working for Bulaklak Komiks in 1955. Carlo Vergara
Visconde Carlo San Juan Vergara or simply known as Carlo Vergara (born January 25, 1971) is a Filipino graphic designer and illustrator best known for creating the comic book character Zsazsa Zaturnnah. Vergara is also a theatre performer and published playwright. Biography The son of a tax lawyer and an English teacher, Vergara began to draw even before he started school. He considered drawing as a hobby, and did not want it to be part of his profession. Though he had been accepted in the College of Architecture at the University of the Philippines, he opted to take Marketing Management at the De La Salle University (DLSU), and graduated in 1990. Zsazsa Zaturnnah is a fictional comic book superheroine created by Filipino illustrator and graphic designer Carlo Vergara.
