List Of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club Players
This is a list in alphabetical order of cricketers who have played for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club in top-class matches since the club was founded in 1841. Like the Nottinghamshire county teams formed by earlier organisations, essentially the old Nottingham Cricket Club, the county club has always held first-class status.ACS, ''First-Class Matches'', p. 11. It has been a List A team since the beginning of limited overs cricket in 1963; and a top-class Twenty20 team since the inauguration of the Twenty20 Cup in 2003. The details are the player's usual name followed by the years in which he was active as a Nottinghamshire player and then his name is given as it usually appears on match scorecards. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Ted Alletson
Edwin Boaler Alletson, (6 March 1884 – 5 July 1963), played English county cricket for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club during the early years of the 20th century. He was predominantly selected by Nottinghamshire as a right-handed batsman and a not-very-successful fast bowler and, with one exception, his career was unspectacular. Over the 179 innings of his career, he passed 50 runs only 14 times, and converted just one of those 50s to a century. Alletson secured his place in cricket history with one record-breaking innings played against Sussex County Cricket Club in May 1911. The innings rescued the game for Nottinghamshire and became known as Alletson's Innings. He never repeated this success. His career ended three years later, when he was 30, when cricket was suspended at the onset of World War I. He died in 1963, aged 79. Tom Atkinson
Tom Atkinson (27 September 1930 – 2 September 1990) was an English first-class cricketer who was born in Millom, Cumbria, and died in Glasgow. John Atkinson (cricketer)
John Atkinson (7 June 1878 – 20 November 1951) was an English first-class cricketer. Atkinson was a left-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox. He was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Atkinson made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's in 1899. The following season he made three first-class appearances in the 1900 County Championship against Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire. He made three further first-class appearances in 1901, against the Marylebone Cricket Club, Gloucestershire in the County Championship and the touring South Africans. In his seven first-class matches he took 10 wickets at an average of 42.50, with best figures of 1/28. Nathan Astle
Nathan John Astle (born 15 September 1971) is a former New Zealand cricketer, who played all formats of the game. A right-handed batsman who played as an opener in One Day Internationals (ODI), while batting in the middle order in Test matches. In a career that spanned 12 years, Astle played 81 Tests and 223 ODIs accumulating 4,702 and 7,090 runs respectively. As of 2022, he is New Zealand's fourth-most prolific run scorer. Astle collected 154 wickets with his medium-paced bowling at the international level. He holds two records – scoring the fastest double century in Test cricket and the second highest individual score in the fourth innings of a Test match. Both the records were achieved when he made 222 against England in Christchurch in 2002. Ravichandran Ashwin () (born 17 September 1986) is an Indian international cricketer who plays for the Indian cricket team as a bowling All-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off-break, he plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Arthur Ashwell (cricketer, Born 1853)
Arthur Thomas Ashwell (8 February 1853 – 30 September 1925) was an English cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire. He was a right-handed batsman. He was born in Nottingham and died in Canterbury, Kent. Ashwell made just two first-class appearances for Nottinghamshire during the 1876 season, and in the two innings in which he batted, he failed to score a run. Thomas Armstrong (Nottinghamshire Cricketer)
Thomas Armstrong (16 March 1872 – 5 July 1938) was an English first-class cricketer. Armstrong was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire. Armstrong made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1892. From 1892 to 1896, he represented the county in 6 first-class matches, the last of which came against the Marylebone Cricket Club during the 1896 season. In his 6 first-class matches, he scored 67 runs at a batting average of 7.44, with a high score of 20 *. He died at the town of his birth on 5 July 1938. Thomas Armstrong came from a sporting family. Alan Armitage
Alan Kenneth Armitage (born 25 January 1930) is an English former first-class cricketer. Armitage was a right-handed batsman who occasionally fielded as a wicket-keeper. He was born at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Armitage made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against Warwickshire in the 1950 County Championship. He played a further match that season against Hampshire. In 1951, he made a single first-class appearance for his home county against Oxford University, where incidentally he himself was also studying. In that same season he made two first-class appearances for the university, against the Free Foresters and Leicestershire. In the match against the Free Foresters he scored his only first-class century, making 155 runs in the university's first-innings, while in their second-innings he followed this up with an unbeaten 57. Graeme Archer (cricketer)
Graeme Francis Archer is a former English first-class cricketer. A middle order batsman, he played 100 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire from 1992 to 1999. He was awarded his Nottinghamshire cap in 1995. He later played Minor Counties Championship cricket for Staffordshire and Cheshire and club cricket in the Derbyshire Premier Cricket League. He made a bright start to his career, averaging 47.5 in seven matches in his debut season in 1992, but found runs harder to come by in 1993. He established himself as a regular in 1994 and excelled in 1995, passing 1,000 runs for the first time in scoring 1,171 at 40.37. He built on this with 918 at 43.71 the following year, but despite having his best one day season in 1997, scoring 489 runs at 44.45 with two centuries, his performances fell away and after three years of averaging under thirty in the County Championship he was released. Henry Anthony (16 May 1873 or 20 September 1876 – 13 July 1928) was an English first-class cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Nottinghamshire. He was born in either Old Basford or Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Anthony made four first-class appearances between 1898 and 1902, in the Nottinghamshire lower-order. Anthony's brother, George and uncle Alfred also played first-class cricket, the brothers partnering each other in the lower order in Henry's final first-class game. George Anthony (cricketer)
George Anthony (25 June 1875 – 13 May 1907) was an English first-class first-class cricketer. He made 85 appearances for Nottinghamshire between August 1900 and June 1905, scoring 1722 runs and taking 82 wickets. He died just two years after making his last first-class appearance, at the age of 31. He made his best score, 89, against Derbyshire while his best bowling, 6 for 72, came against Leicestershire.
