New York State Senate
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature; the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Its members are elected to two-year terms; there are no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. Partisan composition The New York State Senate was dominated by the Republican Party for much of the 20th century. Between World War II and the turn of the 21st century, the Democratic Party only controlled the upper house for one year. The Democrats took control of the Senate following the 1964 elections; however, the Republicans quickly regained a Senate majority in special elections later that year. By 2018, the State Senate was the last Republican-controlled body in New York government. In the 2018 elections, Democrats gained eight Senate seats, taking control of the chamber from the Republicans. Joseph Addabbo Jr
Joseph Patrick Addabbo Jr. (born May 13, 1964) is an American politician, a Democratic member of the New York State Senate from the 15th district representing Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth and parts of South Ozone Park, Ridgewood, Woodside and The Rockaways. Life and career Addabbo was born in 1964, the youngest child of Congressman Joseph Patrick Addabbo, Sr., and Grace Addabbo. He attended Nativity BVM School in Ozone Park and Archbishop Molloy High School, graduating in 1982. He later received degrees from St. John's University (1986) and Touro Law School. His father, Joseph P. Addabbo Sr., served 13 terms in the United States House of Representatives. Platt Adams (politician)
Platt Adams (December 20, 1792 – May 12, 1887 in New York City) was an American merchant and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joseph Adams (d. 1832), and was born on the family farm about six miles below Catskill, then in Albany County, now in Greene County. He married Clarissa Dudley (1791–1857), and they had four children. He was at times Postmaster of Durham; Supervisor of the Town of Durham, a Justice of the Peace, and a colonel of the State Militia. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Greene Co.) in 1820–21, Sheriff of Greene County from 1829 to 1831, and again a member of the State Assembly in 1839. He was a member of the New York State Senate (10th D.) in 1848 and 1849. On May 16, 1859, he married Jennie Eliza Montgomery (d. 1899). Congressman John Adams (1778–1854) was his brother. Levi Adams (December 30, 1762June 18, 1831) was an American farmer and politician. He served in the New York Senate from 1818 through 1822, representing Lewis County, and was a member of New York's Council of Appointment in 1820. Eric Leroy Adams (born September 1, 1960) is an American politician and retired police captain serving as the 110th mayor of New York City since January 1, 2022. Adams was an officer in the New York City Transit Police and then the New York City Police Department for more than 20 years, retiring at the rank of captain. He served in the New York State Senate from 2006 to 2013, representing the 20th Senate district in Brooklyn. In November 2013, Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President, the first African-American to hold the position. He was reelected in November 2017.
