National Council Of Provinces
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is the upper house of the Parliament of South Africa under the (post-apartheid) constitution which came into full effect in 1997. It replaced the former Senate, but is very similar to that body, and to many other upper houses of legislatures throughout the world, in that its purpose is to represent the governments of the provinces, rather than directly representing the people. Composition The NCOP consists of ninety delegates, ten delegates for each of the nine provinces regardless of the population of the province. Each province is equally represented in the NCOP. A provincial delegation is composed of six permanent delegates and four special delegates. The party representation in the delegation must proportionally reflect the party representation in the provincial legislature, based on a formula included in the Constitution. Farhat Essack
Farhat Essack is a South African politician who has been a Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since April 2022. Esaack had previously served as a Thaba Chweu Local Municipality councillor from 1996 to 2014 and as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Mpumalanga from 2014 to 2019. Political career Essack had served as a DA councillor in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality in Mpumalanga from 1996 until his election to the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of parliament, in 2014. Jaco Londt
Johan Jaco Londt (born 27 November 1984) is a South African politician who has been the Western Cape's Provincial Minister of Social Development and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since June 2024. Prior to serving in the provincial parliament, he was a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces between May 2014 and September 2018 and again from May 2019 until May 2024. Between September 2018 and May 2019, he served as a member of the National Assembly. Londt is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), of which he serves as the party's provincial chairperson in the Western Cape. Western Cape
The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, situated on the south-western coast of the country. It is the fourth largest of the nine provinces with an area of , and the third most populous, with an estimated 7 million inhabitants in 2020. Cathlene Labuschagne is a South African politician serving as a permanent delegate to the National Council of the Provinces from the Western Cape since 2014. Labuschagne is a party member of the Democratic Alliance. Life and career Labuschagne was born in Durbanville in the former Cape Province. She moved to Namibia and completed her high school education at Mariental High School in Mariental. She returned to South Africa and studied at the University of Stellenbosch. Inkatha Freedom Party
The Inkatha Freedom Party ( zu, IQembu leNkatha yeNkululeko, IFP) is a right-wing political party in South Africa. The party has been led by Velenkosini Hlabisa since the party's 2019 National General Conference. Mangosuthu Buthelezi founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. The IFP is currently the fourth largest party in the National Assembly of South Africa, in 2014 yielding third place to the Economic Freedom Fighters, formed in 2013. Jacques Warren William Julius (born 4 June 1972) is a South African Democratic Alliance politician from Gauteng who served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from May 2019 to December 2021. He was acting Chief Whip between the resignation of John Steenhuisen and the appointment of Natasha Mazzone in October 2019. He became a Member of the National Assembly in May 2019. North West (South African Province)
North West is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Mahikeng. The province is located to the west of the major population centre of Gauteng and south of Botswana. History North West was incorporated after the end of Apartheid in 1994, and includes parts of the former Transvaal Province and Cape Province, as well as most of the former bantustan of Bophuthatswana. It was the scene of political violence in Khutsong, Merafong City Local Municipality in 2006 and 2007, after cross-province municipalities were abolished and Merafong Municipality was transferred entirely to North West. Merafong has since been transferred to Gauteng province in 2009. Chris Hattingh
Christian "Chris" Hattingh is a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's official opposition, he has served at various times in the local, provincial and national tiers of his country's government. He was the longest-serving member of the North West Provincial Legislature before moving to the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of the national parliament in Cape Town, serving between 2015 and 2019. Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are East London and Gqeberha. The second largest province in the country (at 168,966 km2) after Northern Cape, it was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands or bantustans of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. The central and eastern part of the province is the traditional home of the indigenous Xhosa people. In 1820 this area which was known as the Xhosa Kingdom began to be settled by Europeans who originally came from England and some from Scotland and Ireland.
