Naga People
Nagas are various ethnic groups native to northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar. The groups have similar cultures and traditions, and form the majority of population in the Indian states of Nagaland and Manipur and Naga Self-Administered Zone of Myanmar; with significant populations in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in India; Sagaing Region and Kachin State in Myanmar (Burma). The Nagas are divided into various Naga ethnic groups whose numbers and population are unclear. They each speak distinct Naga languages often unintelligible to the others, but all are somehow in a way loosely connected to each other. Etymology The present day Naga people have been called by many names, like 'Noga' by Assamese, 'Hao' by Manipuri and 'Chin' by Burmese. However, over time 'Naga' became the commonly accepted nomenclature, and was also used by the British. James Kithan
James Kithan (born 26 December 1994) is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for I-League club Gokulam Kerala. Career Earlier career Born in Dimapur, Nagaland, Kithan began his career in his native state with Kohima Komets. He soon moved to Kolkata to play for Peerless and then Mohammedan in the Calcutta Football League. In 2017, he once again moved south, this time to join Viva Chennai. Churchill Brothers Kithan joined Churchill Brothers prior to the 2017–18 I-League season. He made his professional debut for the club on 2 December 2017 against Shillong Lajong. Thuingaleng Muivah
Thuingaleng Muivah (born 3 March 1934) is a Naga separatist politician and General Secretary of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland(I-M). Early career He joined the Naga National Council (NNC), an armed group campaigning for secession of Nagaland from India. He subsequently became the General Secretary of NNC. When a group of NNC leaders signed the Shillong Accord of 1975 with the Government of India, Muviah and some others denounced them as traitors. Jadonang Malangmei
Jadonang Malangmei (1905-1931) popularly known as Haipou Jadonang was a Naga spiritual leader and political activist from Manipur, British India. He established the ''Heraka'' religious movement, which was based on the ancestral Naga religion, and declared himself to be the "messiah king" of the Nagas. His movement was widespread in the Zeliangrong territory before the conversion to Christianity. He also espoused the cause of an independent Naga kingdom ("Makam Gwangdi" or "Naga Raj"), which brought him in conflict with the colonial British rulers of India. He was hanged by the British in 1931, and succeeded by his cousin Rani Gaidinliu. National Socialist Council Of Nagaland
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) is a Naga nationalist separatist group operating mainly in Northeast India, with minor activities in northwest Myanmar (Burma). The main aim of the organisation is to establish a sovereign Naga state, "Nagalim", which would consist of all the areas belonging to the Naga people in Northeast India and northwest Myanmar. The NSCN's slogan is "Nagaland for Christ". There were once two major factions of the NSCN which include the former NSCN (K), which was led by S. S. Khaplang; and the still active NSCN (I-M), led by now by Isak Chishi Swu and formerly by Thuingaleng Muivah. In 2015 in response to an attack on an army convoy in Manipur, India designated the NSCN (K) as a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Naga National Council
The Naga National Council (NNC) is a political organization of Naga people, active from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. It evolved out of the Naga Hills District Tribal Council, an organization established in 1945 by the Deputy Commissioner of the Naga Hills district. The group was reorganized to form NNC in 1946 at Sanis (in present-day Wokha district), with Eno T. Aliba Imti Ao as the President, and other democratically elected Naga representatives as its members. Later, NNC declared Independence one day ahead of India i.e. on 14 August 1947. History In April 1945, the deputy commissioner of the Naga Hills District, C. R. Pawsey, established the Naga Hills District Tribal Council as a forum of the various Naga groups in the district. Tubu Kevichüsa
Perietsü Tubu Kevichüsa (; 30 March 1948 – 4 June 1996) was the General Secretary of Naga National Council who served until his assassination in June 1996 by armed men from the NSCN-IM. His brother Chalie Kevichüsa was also assassinated by the NSCN-IM in September 1992. Early life Perietsü Tubu Kevichüsa was born on 30 March 1948 in Kohima to a prominent family with significant political influence in Nagaland throughout the last half of the 20th century. His mother and father were Germanthangi and Kevichüsa Angami. His mother is Mizo, originating from present-day Mizoram. His father is Angami Naga, originating from Khonoma. Career Kevichüsa began his career as a lawyer but left India in the 1980s to work with the separatist Federal Government of Nagaland under Angami Zapu Phizo. Hekani Jakhalu Kense
Hekani Jakhalu Kense (; born after 1976) is an Indian politician and social entrepreneur from Nagaland. She set up the non-governmental organization YouthNet to help the youths of Nagaland pursue business opportunities. She was recognised with the Nari Shakti Puraskar award in 2018. In 2023, Jakhalu along with Salhoutuonuo Kruse became the first women from Nagaland to be elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. She is a member of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). Early life Hekani Jakhalu was born in Dimapur, Nagaland. Zuboni Hümtsoe
Zuboni Hümtsoe (1990 – 13 November 2017) was an Indian entrepreneur from Nagaland who started an online fashion and handicraft brand called ''PreciousMeLove'' in Nagaland. She was given the Nari Shakti Puraskar, a national award. On 13 November 2017, Hümtsoe was found dead at her home in Dimapur, Nagaland; her death was ruled a suicide. Her businesses continued to be led by her sister Lozano, in Dimapur. Life Hümtsoe was born in 1990 in Nagaland. She went to Delhi University and she had experimented with selling foreign fashion items that were imported by her air hostess sister Lozano Hümtsoe. They were able to but garments cheaply buy they could not cope with the range of sizes expected by customers. She was responsible for the founding of PreciousMeLove which started in 2011. Viseyie Koso (born 25 March 1984) is an Indian professional Sepak Takraw player from Nagaland. In 2010, Koso became the first Naga sportsman to represent India at the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.
