Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The draw for the 2012 fixtures took place on 6 October 2011. The championship began on 19 May 2012 and ended on 30 September 2012. Kilkenny were the defending champions and successfully retained their title following a 3–22 to 3–11 victory over Galway in a replay of the final. Teams A total of fourteen teams contested the championship, including all of the teams from the 2011 championship. There were no new teams entering the championship. Laois and Westmeath were the first teams to exit the 2011 championship, however, there was no relegation play-off. Both teams contested the 2012 championship. 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2018 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 131st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. It is the first tier of senior inter-county championship hurling. The championship began on 12 May 2018 and ended on 19 August 2018. The draw for the championship round-robin fixtures was held off camera on 19 October 2017 and announced on the championship draw broadcast on RTÉ2. The Championship was won by Limerick, who were crowned champions after overcoming Galway in the final by a score line of 3–16 to 2-18. Limerick's victory was their eighth All-Ireland title and first since 1973. The 2018 Championship has been described by many as one of the best ever. Ross King (hurler)
Ross King (born 16 August 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays for Laois Senior Championship club Rathdowney–Errill and at inter-county level with the Laois senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left corner-forward. Career King first came to prominence as a member of the Rathdowney–Errill club at juvenile and underage levels. He eventually joined the club's senior team and has since won County Championship titles in 2012, 2014 and 2019. He simultaneously played with University College Dublin in the Fitzgibbon Cup, having earlier won a Collingwood Cup medal as a soccer player. King made his first appearances at inter-county level during a three-year stint with the Laois under-21 team. He joined the Laois senior hurling team in 2014 and was at corner-forward when Laois secured the 2019 Joe McDonagh Cup title. 2017 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2017 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 130th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 23 April 2017 and ended on 3 September 2017. The draw for the championship was held on 13 October 2016 and was broadcast live on RTÉ2. Tipperary, the 2016 champions, were defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Meath fielded a team in the championship for the first time since 2004. On 3 September 2017 Galway won the championship following a 0–26 to 2–17 defeat of Waterford in the All-Ireland final. Ballinakill GAA
Ballinakill GAA is a hurling and Gaelic football club in Ballinakill, County Laois, Ireland. The club colours are maroon and white and the club grounds are in Ballinakill village near the border with County Kilkenny. History In 1888, the Ballinakill club won the first ever Laois Senior Football Championship but these days the club is more renowned as a hurling heartland. After two final defeats in 1941 and 1966, Ballinakill won its first ever hurling title in 1969 when they defeated Kyle in the final 2-7 to 1-5 to win the Laois Junior Hurling Championship. Charles Dwyer
Charles "Cha" Dwyer (born 1994) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-forward for the Laois senior team. Born in Ballinakill, County Laois, Dwyer first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Castlecomer Community School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Laois minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2013 league. Dwyer subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen. Borris-in-Ossory GAA
Borris-in-Ossory GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the small town of Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois, Ireland. The club colours are red and white and the club grounds are called O'Keefe Park. Formerly, primarily a hurling club, Borris-in-Ossory now operates solely as a gaelic football club. It amalgamates at all age levels with its neighbouring club, Kilcotton GAA, with which it competes in hurling as Borris-in-Ossory–Kilcotton GAA. The clubs however field separate Gaelic football teams, and compete as separate clubs in the Laois Junior C Football Championship. The club won five Laois Senior Hurling Championships, the last of which came in 1972. The Laois and Leinster hurler Christy O'Brien played in all five wins and was captain for the first four wins between 1956 and 1961. Matthew Whelan (hurler)
Matthew Whelan (born 1 February 1988) is an Irish hurler who plays for Laois Senior Championship club Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton. He is a former member of the Laois senior hurling team. Career Whelan first came to Gaelic games prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Borris-in-Ossory club, before eventually joining the club's top adult team. After the creation of the new Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton club, he went on to win a County Senior Championship in 2016, having earlier won three intermediate titles. Whelan first played at inter-county level as a dual player with the Laois minor teams. He won a Leinster Minor Championship title in 2005, before winning an All-Ireland Schools' Championship title in 2006. Whelan was straight out of the minor grade when he made his Laois senior hurling team debut in 2007. Over the course of the following 15 seasons, he became a first-team regular and had two spells as team captain, while he also won a Joe McDonagh Cup medal ...
