List Of Kazakhstani Submissions For The Academy Award For Best Foreign Language Film
Kazakhstan has submitted fourteen films in the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film category since gaining its independence from the USSR in 1991. In 2008, Kazakhstan received its first-ever Oscar nomination, for the epic Genghis Khan biography, ''Mongol''. Kazakhstan shocked many Oscar prognosticators when the obscure ''Kelin'' was shortlisted in 2010 over better-known films for Italy, Korea, Norway and others. Ultimately, ''Kelin'' failed to reach the final five. Kazakhstan is so far the only Central Asian country to be nominated for an Academy Award. ''Strayed'' (russian: Заблудившийся) is a 2009 Kazakhstani thriller directed by Akan Satayev. The film was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, but it didn't make the final shortlist. Plot A man (Andrey Merzlikin) traveling with his wife (Almagul Rulas) and son (Ilyas Sadyrov) to town takes a short cut across the steppes. The car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and in the morning he finds that his wife and son are gone. While looking for them he discovers a strange shack where an older man and his daughter live. This strange pair seem to have plans for him, but it is unclear what those plans might entail. As he discovers there is no escape from this place, he also gets closer to solving the mystery of what happened to his family, and who this strange man and woman really are. Ermek Tursunov (, born 20 July 1961) Kazakh writer and screenwriter, one of the best Asian Film director according to Asia Pacific Screen Awards, master of sport, international class in futsal. Biography Ermek Tursunov was born in the settlement of Narynkol, Almaty Region, on 20 July 1961. He joined a sports school at the age of 5. Sergey Vladimirovich Dvortsevoy (born 1962) is a Kazakh filmmaker of Russian origin. His 2008 feature film '' Tulpan'', was Kazakhstan's 2009 Academy Awards official submission to Foreign Language Film category. Dvortsevoy worked as an aviation engineer. He also worked for nine years as a radio engineer at Aeroflot; before studying film in Moscow in the early 1990s.
