Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Marzia Grossi
Marzia Grossi (born 2 September 1970) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Biography Grossi, who comes from Florence, began playing tennis at the age of eight. She debuted on the professional circuit in 1989 and was more successful in doubles that year with a semifinal appearance at Athens the highlight. From 1990 to 1992, she didn't feature in any WTA Tour events. She won a WTA tournament title at San Marino in 1993, with a win over top seed Barbara Rittner in the final. The title in San Marino took her ranking into the top 100 and in September she reached a career best 79 in the world. At the 1993 French Open, she qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam singles match for the first time and took 13th seed Nathalie Tauziat to three sets in an opening-round loss. Rita Grande
Rita Grande (born 23 March 1975) is a former tennis player from Italy. During her career, Grande won three singles titles and five doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She also won one singles title and three doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. On 5 November 2001, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 24. On 28 May 2001, she peaked at No. 26 in the doubles rankings. She played the round of 16 in singles at least once in each of the Grand Slam championships, including twice consecutively at the Australian Open, in 2001 and 2002. Following a bad elbow injury that kept her away from competition for about ten months, Rita Grande retired from professional sport in October 2005. Francesca Gordigiani
Francesca Gordigiani (born 20 December 1940) is an Italian former tennis player. Known by her nickname "Cecca", Gordigiani is a native of Florence and the great-granddaughter of famous Italian portrait painter Michele Gordigiani. Her grandfather, Edoardo Gordigiani, was also an impressionist of note. Gordigiani, the girls' singles champion at Roland Garros in 1958, was one of Italy's top players during the 1960s. She won the Italian Tennis Championships in 1964 and reached the third round at Wimbledon on three occasions. Between 1964 and 1968 she represented Italy in the Federation Cup, competing in three singles and four doubles rubbers. Most notably she was the first Italian to win a completed Federation Cup rubber, when she overcame West Germany's Heide Schildknecht in 1965 to earn Italy a place in the quarter-finals. Laura Golarsa (born 27 November 1967) is a former Italian professional tennis player. Golarsa was born in Milan and played on the WTA Tour from 1985 to 2001. She did not win any senior titles but did reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1989. Monica Giorgi
Monica Giorgi (born 3 January 1946) is an Italian former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Livorno, Giorgi twice reached the third round of the French Open during her career and played one Federation Cup tie for Italy, against Australia in the 1972 World Group quarter-finals. Giorgi was very politically active and wore an anti-apartheid shirt onto the court for the tie, which was held in South Africa, for which she was briefly banned by the Italian tennis federation. Giorgi was jailed in the early 1980s for her association with anarchist group Azione Rivoluzionaria. Authorities accused her of being involved in an attempted kidnapping, as well as attempted murder for those injured in the attempt, but she was acquitted of all these charges due to insufficient evidence. Camila Giorgi (; born 30 December 1991) is an Italian professional tennis player. She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 26, achieved on 22 October 2018. She is the current Italian No. 2, after Martina Trevisan. After winning her first ITF title in 2009, Giorgi made her Grand Slam and main-draw debut at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships.
