Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Great Britain Fed Cup Team
The Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team represents the United Kingdom in Fed Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Lawn Tennis Association. In 2020, they lost out on a chance to secure a place at the inaugural Billie Jean King Cup finals, losing to Slovakia 3-1. However, in 2021 they won their play-off against Mexico and will play for another chance to enter the finals in 2022. History Great Britain competed in the first Fed Cup in 1963. They have reached the finals on five occasions, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1981 and 2022. Great Britain is one of only four nations to have participated every year since the tournament's inception. The Billie Jean King Cup (or the BJK Cup) is the premier international team competition in women's tennis, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and changed again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The Billie Jean King Cup is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. The current Chairperson is Katrina Adams. The Czech Republic dominated the BJK Cup in the 2010s, winning six of ten competitions in the decade. 2019 Fed Cup Europe/Africa Zone
The Europe/Africa Zone is one of three zones of regional competition in the 2019 Fed Cup. Group I Venue 1: Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa, Zielona Góra, Poland (indoor hard) Venue 2: University of Bath, Bath, United Kingdom (indoor hard) Dates: 6–9 February The fifteen teams were divided into three pools of four teams and one pool of three teams. Tennis can also be played on different courts, including grass courts, clay courts, hard courts, and artificial grass courts. Standard types of match Singles involves two players competing against each other, usually two men or two women, although games between a man and a woman may be played on an informal basis or as exhibitions. The game starts with one player serving the ball from the right side of the court behind the baseline. The other player must stand behind or close to the baseline on the left side of the court.
