List Of German Federal Navy Ships
The list of German Federal Navy ships includes all ships commissioned into service with the Bundesmarine, the German navy which served West Germany during the Cold War from its foundation in 1956 through the unification of Germany in 1990, after which it was renamed German Navy (''Deutsche Marine'') in 1995. Ship
A ship is a large watercraft that travels the world's oceans and other sufficiently deep waterways, carrying cargo or passengers, or in support of specialized missions, such as defense, research, and fishing. Ships are generally distinguished from boats, based on size, shape, load capacity, and purpose. Ships have supported exploration, trade, warfare, migration, colonization, and science. After the 15th century, new crops that had come from and to the Americas via the European seafarers significantly contributed to world population growth. Ship transport is responsible for the largest portion of world commerce. Lütjens-class Destroyer
The Type 103 ''Lütjens'' class was the last class of destroyers in service with the German Navy. The ships were US guided missile destroyers but with some modifications to meet German requirements. They were replaced by the new ''Sachsen''-class frigates, designated frigate even though they are much larger and more capable in all aspects than the ''Lütjens''-class destroyers. Development The three ''Lütjens'' destroyers were purchased from the US to provide air defence. For German use, they received the following modifications: * Communication systems according to German standards. The ''Lütjens'' class had more aerials and a second mast mounted on the aft funnel. The large air surveillance radar was positioned further aft (above the funnel). In turn, the new antennas and radar location meant that the funnels had to be modified. ''Lübeck'' (F224) was a which served in the '' Bundesmarine'' from 1963 through 1988. Design The Type 120 or ''Köln''-class frigates were built as smooth-deckers and had very elegant lines. The very diagonally cut bow and the knuckle ribs in the foredeck made it easy to navigate. Köln-class Frigate
The ships of the F120 ''Köln'' class of frigates were the first major warships built in Germany after World War II. They were the world's first ships to feature a combined diesel and gas propulsion system. The ships received numerous refits during their long careers with new electronics and torpedo tubes. Black Swan-class Sloop
The ''Black Swan'' class and Modified ''Black Swan'' class were two classes of sloop of the Royal Navy and Royal Indian Navy. Twelve ''Black Swan''s were launched between 1939 and 1943, including four for the Royal Indian Navy; twenty-five Modified ''Black Swan''s were launched between 1942 and 1945, including two for the Royal Indian Navy; several other ships were cancelled. Royal Navy
The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Hunt-class Destroyer
The Hunt class was a class of escort destroyer of the Royal Navy. The first vessels were ordered early in 1939, and the class saw extensive service in the Second World War, particularly on the British east coast and Mediterranean convoys. They were named after British fox hunts. The modern Hunt-class GRP hulled mine countermeasure vessels maintain the Hunt names lineage in the Royal Navy. History The Royal Navy had identified the need for two types of destroyer: larger vessels with heavy gun and torpedo armaments for fleet work and another type for escort duties. Frigate
A frigate () is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have varied somewhat. The name frigate in the 17th to early 18th centuries was given to any full-rigged ship built for speed and maneuverability, intended to be used in scouting, escort and patrol roles. The term was applied loosely to ships varying greatly in design. In the second quarter of the 18th century, the 'true frigate' was developed in France. This type of vessel was characterised by possessing only one armed deck, with an unarmed deck below it used for berthing the crew. Late in the 19th century (British and French prototypes were constructed in 1858), armoured frigates were developed as powerful ironclad warships, the term frigate was used because of their single gun deck.
