Women's Suffrage In California
Women's suffrage in California refers to the political struggle for voting rights for women in the state of California. The movement began in the 19th century and was successful with the passage of Proposition 4 on October 10, 1911. Many of the women and men involved in this movement remained politically active in the national suffrage movement with organizations such as the National American Women's Suffrage Association and the National Woman's Party. Origins of the movement Historian Ronald Schaffer has noted the women's suffrage movement in California "is a story of slow building and initial defeat." Starting the 1860s, a small number of activists began mobilizing for women's suffrage in this western state. In 1868, orators Laura de Force Gordon and Anna Dickinson gave a series of lectures advocating for women's suffrage. Susan B. Emily Pitts Stevens
Emily Pitts Stevens (, Pitts; 1841/44 – September 13, 1906) was an American educator, temperance activist, and early San Francisco suffragist. She was the editor and publisher of ''The Pioneer'', the first women’s suffrage journal in the West Coast of the United States, and was a co-founder of the California Woman Suffrage Association. In addition, she was a businesswoman, teacher, administrator, lecturer, and a founder of women's organizations. In San Francisco, Stevens started an evening school for working girls, and instituted the Seaman's League. After the organization of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in California, she labored on its behalf. She also contributed to the columns of various newspapers, and lectured. Sarah Brown Ingersoll Cooper
Sarah Brown Ingersoll Cooper (December 12, 1835 – December 11, 1896) was an American educator, author, evangelist, philanthropist, and civic activist. She is remember as a religious teacher and her efforts to increase the wide interest in kindergarten work. Cooper served as first president of the International Kindergarten Union, president of the National Kindergarten Union, president and vice-president of the Woman's Press Association, president of the Woman's Suffrage Association, and president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She served as vice-president of the Century Club, treasurer of the World's Federation of Woman's Clubs, a director of the Associated Charities, and one of the five women elected to the Pan-Republican Congress. Ina Coolbrith
Ina Donna Coolbrith (born Josephine Donna Smith; March 10, 1841 – February 29, 1928) was an American poet, writer, librarian, and a prominent figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary community. Called the "Sweet Singer of California", she was the first California Poet Laureate and the first poet laureate of any U.S. state, American state. Coolbrith, born the niece of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founder Joseph Smith, left the Mormon community as a child to enter her teens in Los Angeles, California, where she began to publish poetry. She terminated a youthful failed marriage to make her home in San Francisco, and met writers Bret Harte and Charles Warren Stoddard with whom she formed the "Golden Gate Trinity" closely associated with the literary journal ''Overland Monthly''. Ada Chastina Burpee Bowles (August 2, 1836 – August 30, 1928) was a Universalist minister. Early life Ada Chastina Burpee was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on August 2, 1836. After easily and rapidly learning all that was taught in the public schools of Gloucester, she studied by herself. Career At the age of fifteen she began to teach in the public schools. She continued until she was twenty-two, at the same time writing for the press. Her success with an adult Bible class led her to expand her theological study. Her husband encouraged her to preach the gospel. She began in 1869 in New England. In 1872 she was licensed in Boston to preach and became the non-resident pastor of a church in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Alida Avery
Alida Avery (1833–1908) was a Vassar College faculty member and a physician. In Colorado, she was thought to be the first woman licensed to practice medicine in the state. She was also the Superintendent of Hygiene for Colorado. Avery was among the first women first admitted to the Denver Medical Society. She was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2020. Early life Alida Cornelia Avery was born on June 11, 1833 in Sherburne, New York. Her parents were Hannah (Dixon) Avery and Deacon William Avery. She had two sisters and five brothers. At the age of 16, she began teaching. Women began entering the medical profession in the second half of the 19th century. Some of them attended medical schools founded by and for women.
