Black-owned Businesses
Black-owned businesses (or Black businesses), also known as African-American businesses, originated in the days of slavery before 1865. Emancipation and civil rights permitted businessmen to operate inside the American legal structure starting in the Reconstruction Era (1863–77) and afterwards. By the 1890s, thousands of small business operations had opened in urban areas. The most rapid growth came in the early 20th century, as the increasingly rigid Jim Crow system of segregation moved urban Blacks into a community large enough to support a business establishment. The National Negro Business League—which Booker T. Washington, college president, promoted—opened over 600 chapters. It reached every city with a significant Black population. African-Americans have operated virtually every kind of company, but some of the most prominent Black-owned businesses have been insurance companies, banks, recording labels, funeral parlors, barber shops, beauty salons, restaurants, sou ...

Erica's Soul Food is a restaurant in Portland, Oregon. Description Erica's Soul Food is a Black-owned restaurant serving Southern cuisine and soul food. The menu includes catfish, Atlanta-style chicken wings, meatloaf, and salmon croquettes with sweet onion. Wings have various sauces such as jerk, maple barbecue, and peach sriracha, and are served with blue cheese or ranch dressing. Sides include black-eyed peas, cabbage, collard greens, cornbread, French fries, macaroni and cheese, boiled peanuts, sautéed squash, and tater tots. Boon Boona Coffee is a Black-owned coffee roaster and coffeehouse with two locations in the U.S. state of Washington. History The business was founded by owner Efrem Fesaha in 2012. According to ''Eater Seattle'', "As Fesaha developed the roastery, he established partnerships with farms in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, and other African countries, and focused on supporting woman-owned growers." He opened a cafe in Renton in 2018 or 2019, followed by another in Seattle in 2021. Frenchy's Chicken is a restaurant chain in Houston, Texas selling Louisiana Creole cuisine. Prince's Hot Chicken Shack
Prince's Hot Chicken Shack is a restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee, known for its hot chicken, and is credited with popularizing the dish and inspiring restaurants with similar offerings. The business was started in 1945 by James Thornton Prince, and in 1980 ownership was passed to his great-niece André Prince Jeffries. Reo's Ribs
Reo's Ribs is a barbecue and soul food restaurant in Portland, Oregon. History Reo's Ribs opened on Tualatin Valley Highway in Aloha in 1999. Reo Varnado and Myra Girod moved the business to a strip mall in southwest Portland's Johns Landing in April 2010. Reo's Ribs moved out of the strip mall in 2012. The restaurant operated on Powell Boulevard in southeast Portland, until January 2015. Reo's Ribs relocated to northeast Portland's Hollywood neighborhood in 2015, taking over the space formerly occupied by Hollywood Burger Bar. The restaurant was damaged by a large fire in May 2017. Varnado believed racism was behind the fire, and an investigation was initiated. No evidence of arson was found. In November, Varnado confirmed plans to reopen the restaurant.
