Luis Moglia Barth (12 April 1903 - 18 June 1984) was an Argentine film director and screenwriter, and one of the influential directors in the Cinema of Argentina of the classic era. He directed some 30 films between 1927 and 1959, often screenwriting for his pictures. He died in Buenos Aires, aged 81. John Alton
John Alton (October 5, 1901 – June 2, 1996), born Johann Jacob Altmann, in Sopron, Kingdom of Hungary, was an American cinematographer of Hungarian-German origin. Alton photographed some of the most famous films noir of the classic period and won an Academy Award for the cinematography of ''An American in Paris'' (1951), becoming the first Hungarian-born person to do so in the cinematography category. Career Alton moved to the US to attend college and first became involved in the film industry when he was spotted by a gateman at Cosmopolitan Studios in New York looking for extras. He began as a lab technician in Los Angeles in the 1920s, later becoming a cameraman within four years. He moved to France with Ernst Lubitsch to film backgrounds for ''The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg'' (1927) and ended up staying for one year heading the camera department of Paramount Pictures's Joinville Studios. Enrique Rodríguez Larreta (March 4, 1875 – July 6, 1961) was an Argentine writer, academic, diplomat and art collector. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature ten times. Biography Larreta was born in Buenos Aires to Adela Maza and Carlos Rodríguez Larreta. A member of a traditionally upper-class family from Uruguay, he was married to Josefina Anchorena Castellanos, a daughter of Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena and member of one of the most aristocratic, landowning families of Argentina, the Anchorenas. They had five children; Mercedes, Enrique (born 1902), Josefina (born 1905), Agustin (born 1909) and Fernando (born 1911). He studied law, and graduated at the University of Buenos Aires in 1897. ''¡Tango!'' is a 1933 Argentine musical romance film, the first film to be made in Argentina using optical sound technology (but not the first sound film.) Many existing stars of the Argentine stage and radio appeared in the film, but its success was limited due to poor sound quality and weak acting. ''¡Tango!'' established a formula that would be used by many subsequent tango films. Synopsis ''¡Tango!'' follows a formula established by Carlos Gardel with films such as ''Luces de Buenos Aires'' (''The Lights of Buenos Aires'', 1931) in which a melodramatic story is interspersed with tango songs. However, the film had less dialog and more music, making it more like a musical revue. This format would be copied by many subsequent films. The plot is derived from tango songs. ''Los tres berretines'' (''The Three Whims'') is a 1933 Argentine black and white comedy film, the first film made by the newly formed Lumiton film studio, and one of the first sound films made in Argentina. It was a great success and launched the film career of the comedian Luis Sandrini. In 2022, the film was included in Spanish magazine ''Fotogramas''s list of the 20 best Argentine films of all time. Synopsis The film has traditional popular melodrama plot elements, and includes performances of tango songs. It depicts a family whose members are obsessed with the three national ''berretines'' (interests or hobbies) of tango, football and cinema. (In the play the last ''berretín'' was radio.). The family is middle class and makes its living from a hardware store. The father complains that the hobbies lead the family to neglect business. Enrique Telémaco Susini (January 31, 1891 – July 4, 1972) was an Argentine entrepreneur and media pioneer. In 1920, Susini led the effort for the first radio broadcast in Argentina, and subsequently established one of the earliest regular radio stations in the world. During the 1920s and 1930s, he became a successful entrepreneur in the nascent radio and film industry. Besides his business interests, Susini was an accomplished artist.
