Embudo, New Mexico
Embudo (also Embudo Station) is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. It is on New Mexico State Road 68. The Embudo Station is located south of the intersection of New Mexico State Road 75, near where the Embudo Creek (Rio Embudo) flows into the Rio Grande. Etymology The name "Embudo", meaning "funnel" in Spanish, was given to the area by early Spanish settlers because the spot where the Rio Embudo flowed between two distinctive cone shaped hills reminded them of a funnel. Embudo was founded in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad opened a station (depot) there on its Chili Line. The station was named after the village San Antonio de Embudo, located two miles up the Embudo Creek, and until 1902 the communities shared a post office and were known jointly as Embudo. Dixon, New Mexico
Dixon is an unincorporated community located in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States, on New Mexico State Road 75, just east of New Mexico State Road 68, in the north-central part of the state, and is approximately southwest of Taos. The elevation of Dixon is above sea level. It is on the banks of the Embudo Creek, a tributary of the Rio Grande. Embudo Creek flows into the Rio Grande downstream from Dixon. The town is home to the largest population of organic farmers in the state, as well as several wineries. La Chiripada Winery is an American winery in Dixon, New Mexico, founded in 1981 by Michael and Patrick Johnson. It has regularly won awards for its wines at the Southwest Wine Competition and the New Mexico State Fair Wine Competition. Velarde, New Mexico
Velarde is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 502 at the time of the 2010 census. Velarde is located on New Mexico State Road 68, in the Rio Grande Rift, at the point where the road enters the Rio Grande Gorge. In 1750, Juan Matias Velarde settled Velarde, (2012 New Mexico Blue Book) at the time named La Joya after his Spanish-born ancestor, Juan Antonio Pérez Velarde, who settled near El Paso del Río del Norte (present Ciudad Juárez, Mexico) in 1725. Black Mesa Winery is an American winery in Velarde, New Mexico, founded in 1992. In 2014, Three of Black Mesa's vintages won high awards at the 15th Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition. The winery is known for its chocolate-infused red wine, ''Black Beauty''. Black Mesa produces over twenty-five varieties of New Mexican wine.
