Whitney Biennial
The Whitney Biennial is a biennial exhibition of contemporary American art, typically by young and lesser known artists, on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, United States. The event began as an annual exhibition in 1932; the first biennial was in 1973. The Whitney show is generally regarded as one of the leading shows in the art world, often setting or leading trends in contemporary art. It helped bring artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Jeff Koons to prominence. Artists In 2010, for the first time a majority of the 55 artists included in that survey of contemporary American art were women. The 2012 exhibition featured 51 artists, the smallest number in the event's history. The fifty-one artists for 2012 were selected by curator Elisabeth Sussman and freelance curator Jay Sanders. Fletcher Benton
Fletcher C. Benton (February 25, 1931 – June 26, 2019) was an American sculptor and painter from San Francisco, California. Benton was widely known for his kinetic art as well as his large-scale steel abstract geometric sculptures. Life Born in the coal, nugget and iron-producing district of southern Ohio, Benton was a successful sign painter as a youth. After serving in the United States Navy, he graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1956. Thereafter he moved to San Francisco, and began as an instructor at the California College of Arts and Crafts and then went to Europe, traveling by his motorcycle through Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and France; he spent some time in Paris and then in New York and later moved back to San Francisco. Cynthia Carlson
Cynthia Carlson (born 1942) is an American visual artist, living and working in New York. Personal life and education Carlson was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago and then attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her BFA in 1965. She moved to New York City and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, graduating with her MFA in 1967. She is married to Robert Gino Bertoletti. Career In the 1960s, Carlson's art was influenced by the work of The Hairy Who and Chicago Imagists artists in Chicago. During the 1970s, she was a pioneer of the "Pattern and Decoration" group in New York City, in which the Feminist movement played an important role. Peter Campus (born 1937 in New York, NY), often styled as peter campus, is an American artist and a pioneer of new media and video art, known for his interactive video installations, single-channel video works, and photography. His work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions, including The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Roger Brown (December 10, 1941 – November 22, 1997) was an American artist and painter. Often associated with the Chicago Imagist groups, he was internationally known for his distinctive painting style and shrewd social commentaries on politics, religion, and art. Early life Roger Brown was born on December 10, 1941, and raised in Hamilton and Opelika, Alabama. He was described in his formative years as a creative child, an inclination his parents are said to have encouraged. Brown took art classes from second to ninth grade, and won first prize in a statewide poster competition in tenth grade. After high school Brown left the South. Peter Bradley (artist)
Peter Bradley (born September 15, 1940) is an American painter and sculptor and former art dealer. He attended the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and Yale University. His work was included in the 1973 Whitney Biennial. As an art dealer he was the associate director of the Perls Galleries from 1968 until 1975. He later donated his papers from this period to the Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution. In 1971 while associate director of the Perls Galleries, Bradley curated '' The De Luxe Show'' under the auspices of the famed de Menil family in Houston, Texas, considered to be one of the early racially integrated art exhibitions in the United States. James Boynton (artist)
James Stoddard Boynton (May 7, 1833December 22, 1902) was an American politician and jurist. Early life Boynton was born in Henry County, Georgia on May 7, 1833. He was a lawyer, having passed the bar in 1852. Civil War Boynton fought in the Civil War, serving as a private with the 30th Georgia Infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta, and achieved the rank of colonel by the end of the war. After the war, Boynton moved to Griffin in 1865. Political life Boynton briefly served as the 51st Governor of Georgia from 1883 after the death of governor Alexander Stephens. At the time of Stephens death, Boynton was serving as the president of the Georgia Senate so he assumed the governorship. Bill Bollinger (July 15, 1939 – May 27, 1988) was an American artist. Ronald Bladen
Ronald Bladen (July 13, 1918 – February 3, 1988) was a Canadian-born American painter and sculptor. He is particularly known for his large-scale sculptures. His artistic stance, was influenced by European Constructivism, American Hard-Edge Painting, and sculptors such as Isamu Noguchi and David Smith. Bladen in turn had stimulating effect on a circle of younger artists including Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and others, who repeatedly referred to him as one of the 'father figures' of Minimal Art.
