Watermill
A watermill or water mill is a mill that uses hydropower. It is a structure that uses a water wheel or water turbine to drive a mechanical process such as milling (grinding), rolling, or hammering. Such processes are needed in the production of many material goods, including flour, lumber, paper, textiles, and many metal products. These watermills may comprise gristmills, sawmills, paper mills, textile mills, hammermills, trip hammering mills, rolling mills, wire drawing mills. One major way to classify watermills is by wheel orientation (vertical or horizontal), one powered by a vertical waterwheel through a gear mechanism, and the other equipped with a horizontal waterwheel without such a mechanism. Helen, Georgia
Helen is a city in White County, Georgia, United States, located along the Chattahoochee River. The population was 531 at the 2020 census. History Helen was platted in 1912, and named after the daughter of a lumber official. The town was incorporated in 1913. Formerly a logging town that was in decline, the city resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. This design is mandated through zoning first adopted in 1969, so that the classic south-German style is present on every building, even on the small number of national franchisees present (such as Huddle House and Wendy's). Wildcat Den State Park
Wildcat Den State Park is a state park in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The park features cliffs, rock formations, and several historic structures. The 1848 Pine Creek Gristmill and Pine Mill Bridge are both on the National Register of Historic Places. The campground has 20 campsites, but lacks modern restroom facilities. Campsites and two open shelters can be reserved ahead of time through the online reservation system, iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com. Additional campsites and other recreational facilities can be found away at the Fairport State Recreation Area, which is directly on the Mississippi River. Pine Creek Gristmill
Pine Creek Gristmill is a historic building located in Wildcat Den State Park in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. History Benjamin Nye was one of the first permanent white settlers/residents to the area after it was opened to settlement in 1833. He and his cousin built their homes near the Mississippi River and named the settlement Montpelier as they were originally from Vermont. He built his first mill in 1835, but it was washed out because it was built too close to the Mississippi river. Nye built a water powered saw mill further upstream to the North on Pine Creek. Two years later he added a gristmill across the creek. He also built the county's first store and post office. As his business expanded the present mill was built by Nye in 1848 for $10,000 (then dollars) with timber he cut in his own mill. Roann is a town in Paw Paw Township, Wabash County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 479 at the 2010 census. History There are two theories on how the town of Roann got its name. One source claims that the community was named for Roanne, France. Another tells a legend about how a father saw his daughter on a boat in a dangerous current and was shouting at her "Row, Ann!" The Roann post office has been in operation since 1866. The Thomas J. Mitchell, Indiana
Mitchell is a city in Marion Township, Lawrence County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,350 at the 2010 census. History Mitchell was built as a railroad town in the mid-19th century. At this location in Lawrence County, the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railroad, better known by the shorter name of "the Monon", was built as a north-south line from New Albany to Chicago, passing through the area which became Mitchell in 1853. In 1857, the east-west Ohio and Mississippi Railway (later part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) was completed, as part of a link between Cincinnati and St. Louis. At the intersection of the two rail lines, a new town was planned. Spring Mill State Park
Spring Mill State Park is a state park in the state of Indiana. The park is located to the south of Bloomington, about east of the city of Mitchell on Indiana Highway 60. It contains a settler's village, the Gus Grissom Memorial (with the accompanying Gemini 3 space capsule), a nature's center, and campgrounds. The park is located on the Mitchell Karst Plain, which allowed the park's caves and sinkholes to form in the limestone. The caves include Bronson Cave, Twin Caves, Shawnee Cave (Donaldson Cave), Hamer Cave, and others. A boat tour of Twin Caves is run by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which travels about into the cave. A portion of the park is virgin timber, protected in the Donaldson Woods Nature Preserve. Metamora is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Metamora Township, Franklin County, Indiana. The town was once a stop along the Whitewater Canal and is now primarily dependent on tourism. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 188. Mansfield, Indiana
Mansfield (also called Mansfield Village, Dicksons Mills, Dixons Mills, Dublin or New Dublin) is an unincorporated community in Jackson Township, Parke County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History The village was originally named New Dublin by James Kelsey in 1820. Within a couple of years, it was called Dickson's Mills, and then Strain's Mills, before it became known as Mansfield in the 1830s. The village prospered when a roller mill was built by James Kelsey and Francis Dickson in 1820. As the milling industry expanded, the village grew to a thriving town of more than 300. A sash mill and carding mill were added, and the little town gained a general store, blacksmith, cooperage and wagon maker, and a church and school were organized. Beck's Mill
Beck's Mill is a historic gristmill in Washington County, Indiana, in the United States. It is seven miles (11 km) southwest of Salem. It was built in 1808, rebuilt in 1864 after a fire, one year after John Hunt Morgan demanded ransom for every Washington County mill to be spared from burning. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It was on the list of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana's 10 Most Endangered historic places in 2005 and 2006, but was not in 2007 because it received funding for its restoration. Oak Brook is a village mostly in DuPage County with a small portion in Cook County in Illinois. Per the 2020 census, the population was 8,163.
