The following is a list of towns in England and Wales which became urban districts when the Local Government Act 1894 came into force from December 1894 – January 1895. Local Government Act 1894
The Local Government Act 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed local government in England and Wales outside the County of London. The Act followed the reforms carried out at county level under the Local Government Act 1888. The 1894 legislation introduced elected councils at district and parish level. The principal effects of the act were: *The creation a system of urban and rural districts with elected councils. These, along with the town councils of municipal boroughs created earlier in the century, formed a second tier of local government below the existing county councils. *The establishment of elected parish councils in rural areas. *The reform of the boards of guardians of poor law unions. *The entitlement of women who owned property to vote in local elections, become poor law guardians, and act on school boards. Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire ( cy, Sir Gaerfyrddin; or informally ') is a county in the south-west of Wales. The three largest towns are Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford. Carmarthen is the county town and administrative centre. The county is known as the "Garden of Wales" and is also home to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Carmarthenshire has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The county town was founded by the Romans, and the region was part of the Kingdom of Deheubarth in the High Middle Ages. After invasion by the Normans in the 12th and 13th centuries it was subjugated, along with other parts of Wales, by Edward I of England. There was further unrest in the early 15th century, when the Welsh rebelled under Owain Glyndŵr, and during the English Civil War. Longendale Urban District
Longendale Urban District (also known as Longdendale Urban District) was, from 1936 to 1974, a local government district in the administrative county of Cheshire, England. It encompassed parts of Broadbottom, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley and Mottram in Longdendale, all of which form part of the non-statutory Longdendale Valley. The district covered an area close to Cheshire's northeastern boundary with Derbyshire and was bound (from north to west) by Municipal Borough of Mossley, Municipal Borough of Stalybridge, Municipal Borough of Dukinfield and Municipal Borough of Hyde. Tintwistle Rural District, from which Longendale exchanged territory with in 1936, lay to the east. The Urban District was created by the Local Government Act 1894. In 1974 Longendale Urban District was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 and its former area transferred to Greater Manchester to form part of the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside. Hollingworth Urban District
Hollingworth is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, in Greater Manchester, England. It is about 11 miles (19 km) east of Manchester on the Derbyshire border near Glossop. Historically part of Cheshire, it gave its name to a family who owned much of the surrounding area from before the time of the Norman conquest. History Toponymy Hollingworth was recorded ''Holisvrde'' before 1059 and in 1086. Its name is derived from the Old English ''holegn,'' for holly and ''worð'' an enclosure. In 1059, Hollingworth was surrounded by dense forests. Early history An ancient pagan religious site known as Wedneshough Green was in Hollingworth. A grassy knoll opposite the Gunn Inn was anciently called ''Wedenshaw'' or ''Woden's Hawe'' after the pagan god Woden. Municipal Borough Of Dukinfield
Dukinfield is a town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, on the south bank of the River Tame opposite Ashton-under-Lyne, east of Manchester. At the 2011 Census, it had a population of 19,306. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, the town developed as a result of the Industrial Revolution when it became the site of coal mining and cotton manufacturing. History Early history The earliest evidence of human activity around Dukinfield comes from a collection of four flints from the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age. The artifacts were discovered on the site of Dukinfield Hall and have been taken as evidence of a prehistoric settlement on the site. There is no further evidence of activity in the area until the Roman period. A 3rd century bronze Roman coin, from the reign of Emperor Tetricus I was discovered in the town. Macclesfield Rural District was a rural district of Cheshire, England from 1894 to 1974. Macclesfield as a Municipal Borough and Bollington as an urban district formed an enclave which was surrounded by Macclesfield RD. The district was formed in 1894 based on Macclesfield rural sanitary district by the Local Government Act 1894. It was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974 and became part of the new Macclesfield borough, which was itself abolished in 2009.
