The University of Ljubljana ( sl, Univerza v Ljubljani, , la, Universitas Labacensis), often referred to as UL, is the oldest and largest university in Slovenia. It has approximately 39,000 enrolled students. History Beginnings Although certain academies (notably of philosophy and theology) were established as Jesuit higher education in what is now Slovenia as early as the seventeenth century, the first university was founded in 1810 under the ''Écoles centrales'' of the French imperial administration of the Illyrian provinces. The chancellor of the university in Ljubljana during the French period was Joseph Walland (a.k.a. , 1763–1834), born in Upper Carniola. Vlado Dimovski
Vlado Dimovski, Slovenian economist, philosopher, politician, consultant and university professor, * 21 July 1960, Postojna, Slovenia. Biography After finishing the Bežigrad Grammar School Dimovski graduated in 1984 at the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana, where he received also an M.S. in economics in 1988. At the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana he graduated in 1989 also in philosophy. He received his PhD degree in management and finance from the Cleveland State University, Ohio, United States in 1994. Since 1985 Dimovski has been teaching at the School of Economics and Business, Ljubljana, from 2005 onwards as a full professor. Božidar Debenjak
Božidar Debenjak (born 7 May 1935) is a Slovenian Marxist philosopher, social theorist and translator. Biography He was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1961, he became professor at the University of Ljubljana. For more than thirty years, he taught Marxist theory and history of philosophy at the Ljubljana University; many renowned Slovenian philosophers and sociologists were among his pupils, including Slavoj Žižek, Mladen Dolar, Rastko Močnik, Renata Salecl and Tonči Kuzmanić. He was one of the first scholars to introduce the thought of the Frankfurt school in the curricula of Yugoslav universities. He has written several books, mostly on Marxist theory, including a monograph on the thought of Friedrich Engels (''Friedrich Engels: History and Alienation'', 1970), in which he portrayed Engels as a "subtler historical materialist than Marx", who "managed to establish a clearer dividing line between history and nature". Cultural Studies
Cultural studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the political dynamics of contemporary culture (including popular culture) and its historical foundations. Cultural studies researchers generally investigate how cultural practices relate to wider systems of power associated with, or operating through, social phenomena. These include ideology, class structures, national formations, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and generation. Ale is a type of beer brewed using a warm fermentation method, resulting in a sweet, full-bodied and fruity taste. Historically, the term referred to a drink brewed without hops. Milan Brglez
Milan Brglez (; born 1 September 1967) is a Slovenian political scientist and politician who served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Slovenia from 2014 to 2018. He has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2019. A member of the Social Democrats, part of the Party of European Socialists, Brglez was a candidate in the 2022 presidential election. Tatjana Bregant
Tatjana Bregant (16 February 1932 – 15 February 2002) was a Slovenian archaeologist and prehistorian, who was Professor of Pre-Metallic Archaeology at the University of Ljubljana. She was President of the Prehistoric Sections of both the Union of Archaeological Societies of Yugoslavia and the Slovenian Archaeological Society. Biography Bregant was born on 16 February 1932 in Ruta, Lovrenc na Pohorju. She graduated with a degree in Archaeology from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana in 1955. From 1964 she was editor of the ''Report on Paleolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic Research in Slovenia''. Miran Božovič
Miran Božovič (born August 12, 1957) is a Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst, associated with the Ljubljana school of psychoanalysis. Božovič was born in Ljubljana. He holds a degree in comparative literature and philosophy from the University of Ljubljana, and a PhD in philosophy. Gregor Virant
Gregor Virant (born 4 December 1969) is a Slovenian politician and public servant. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as Minister of Public Administration in Janez Janša's first government, between 2011–2013 he was Speaker of the National Assembly of Slovenia. He also served as Minister of the Interior and Public Administration in the government of Alenka Bratušek between 2013 and 2014. He was the leader (October 2011–May 2014) of the Civic List, until April 2012 named ''Gregor Virant's Civic List'', a liberal political party established in October 2011 to compete in the 2011 parliamentary election. Dimitrij Rupel
Dimitrij Rupel (born 7 April 1946) is a Slovenian politician. Early life and education Rupel was born in Ljubljana, in what was then the PR Slovenia, into a bourgeois family of former anti-fascist political emigrants from the Julian March (his grandfather was the last Slovenes, Slovene mayor of Duino in Austria-Hungary). After receiving a bachelor's degree in comparative literature and sociology from the University of Ljubljana, he continued his studies at the University of Essex, and Brandeis University where he obtained a PhD in sociology in 1976. During this time, he published literary works, journalistic and critical articles, and worked as a translator and editor. Dušan Radonjič
Dušan Radonjič (born 1941) is a Slovenian economist, university professor ( University of Maribor) and member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (class of Social Sciences, Law and Economics). Education and work In Maribor he finished primary and high school; he studied economics at University of Ljubljana and Zagreb. At latter he completed PhD. He is a tenured professor at Faculty of Economics and Business and also at Faculty of Logistics.
