The International Pageant of Pulchritude, also known as Miss Universe or the International Beauty Contest, was a beauty contest that began in 1920, featuring contestants from multiple nations. This pageant originated the title "Miss Universe" and was the first international contest. The last pageant event in the United States was held in 1931 although additional Miss Universe events were held until 1935. The contest served as a model for modern contests that began after World War II. The contest originated in Galveston, Texas, United States. Keriman Halis Ece
Keriman Halis Ece (February 16, 1913 – January 28, 2012) was a Turkish beauty pageant titleholder, pianist, and fashion model who won the Miss Turkey 1932 title. She was also crowned Miss Universe 1932 in Spa, Belgium and thus became Turkey's first Miss Universe. Biography She was of Ubykh origin. Keriman Halis was born in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, as one of the six children of a merchant from Hacıosman, Manyas, Tevfik Halis Bey, in 1913. She grew up in a family with a religious background. During her childhood, her family lived in Findikzade, where she was surrounded by French nannies. Her grandfather was a Sheikh Al Islam, an advisor to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. According to the Atlanta Constitution, her grandfather was a conservative mighty religious man who kept her secluded from the public in a palace in order to hide her beauty from the public. Miss Europe
Miss Europe is a beauty pageant for European women from all over Europe. It was established in February 1927 by Fanamet, the European distributor of Paramount, as a one-off event where the winner was to star in a film directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. After the initial twelve-person jury couldn't decide between 10 contestants, a runoff election was held where Murnau chose the winner. Murnau ended up choosing Štefica Vidačić of Yugoslavia as the winner and the first ever Miss Europe. Miss Europe was later re-established in December 1928 by French journalist Maurice de Waleffe (1874–1946), who also created, in 1920, what by 1927 had become the Miss France pageant. Günseli Başar (22 January 1932 – 20 April 2013) was a Turkish beauty contestant and columnist who was crowned Miss Turkey 1951 and Miss Europe 1952. Biography Başar was born on February 22, 1932, to an officer's family in İstanbul, where her father was stationed. However, her birth was registered some time later in Erzurum due to her father's transfer. Her great-grand uncle was Grand Vizier Halil Rifat Pasha, founder of the almshouse ( tr, Darülaceze) in Istanbul and commissioner of the İzmir Clock Tower. Nazlı Deniz Kuruoğlu (born c. 1960) is a Turkish people, Turkish ballet dancer and a former beauty contestant and Miss Europe 1982. Biography She was educated in ballet dancing at the Conservatory of Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, Turkey. She danced in the state opera until she had to quit active dancing career following a meniscus (anatomy), meniscus operation. Currently, she is lecturing movement science in the same university. Nazlı Deniz is also partner of a cosmetics company. She enjoys painting and outdoor sports like horseback riding and motocross. Neşe Erberk (born October 14, 1964) is a Turkish businesswoman, a former fashion model, beauty contestant and Miss Europe 1984. Biography She was born on October 14, 1964, in Istanbul, Turkey. She completed her education at Robert College and Boğaziçi University. After winning the title of Miss Turkey 1983, Neşe represented her country the next year at the Miss Europe beauty contest held in Bad Gastein, Austria, and was crowned Miss Europe.
