Tower of Power (TOP) is an American rhythm and blues band from Oakland, California. Formed in August 1968, the group is centred around a horn section which originally featured tenor saxophonists Emilio "Mimi" Castillo and Steven "Skip" Mesquite, baritone saxophonist Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and trumpeters Greg Adams, David Padron, Mic Gillette and Ken Balzell. The rest of the original lineup included vocalist Rufus Miller, guitarist Willie James Fulton, bassist Francis Rocco Prestia and drummer David Garibaldi. A tower is a tall structure, taller than it is wide, often by a significant factor. Towers are distinguished from masts by their lack of guy-wires and are therefore, along with tall buildings, self-supporting structures. Towers are specifically distinguished from buildings in that they are built not to be habitable but to serve other functions using the height of the tower. ''Tower of Power'' is the third album release for the Oakland-based band, Tower of Power. This is their most successful album to date, which was released in May 1973. The album peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' Top LPs chart in 1973 and received a gold record award for sales in excess of 500,000. The album spawned their most successful single, "So Very Hard to Go". The single peaked at No. 17 during the week of July 28, 1973 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Two other singles from the album also charted on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100: "This Time It's Real" and "What Is Hip?". We Came To Play!
''We Came to Play!'' is an album by Tower of Power released in 1978. It marked the debut of singer Michael Jeffries, who would stay with T.O.P. through the mid-1980s. Steve Cropper (of Booker T. & the M.G.'s fame) produced this album. This album features Victor Conte, the future founder of the controversial BALCO, on bass, and who is also the cousin of band guitarist Bruce Conte. Drummer Ron Beck takes a lead vocal spot on "Love Bug", which features founding T.O.P. drummer David Garibaldi on second drums. Garibaldi would return to the band on the next album, but neither Conte, Bruce or Victor, would after this album. Michael Jeffries (singer)
Michael Jeffries is a rhythm and blues singer from Memphis, Tennessee, best known for his stint as a lead vocalist for the R&B/Soul band Tower of Power from 1978 to the Mid-1980s. History Jeffries got his start as a part of the California band, The Two Things In One and scored a regional hit with the 1973 single "Together Forever". It would lead to his stint with Tower of Power starting with 1978's ''We Came to Play!'' and he would stay with the band through the Mid-1980s, making his stint with TOP the second longest stint as lead vocalist, behind Larry Braggs. Jeffries would go solo with the single "Razzle Dazzle" from the soundtrack to the movie ''Wildcats''. ''Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now'' is an album by Tower of Power released in 1976, the band's first record on Columbia Records. Ron Beck takes up the drummers spot after David Garibaldi exited for a second time. This also would be the last album to feature bassist Francis "Rocco" Prestia as he would go on an extended hiatus from the band until his return in 1986. It is also the only album to feature vocalist Edward McGee. Release history In addition to the standard 2 channel stereo version the album was also released by Columbia in a 4 channel quadraphonic version in 1976 on LP and 8-track tape. The quad LP was encoded with the SQ matrix. This album was reissued in the UK on the Super Audio CD format in 2016 by Dutton Vocalion. This release contains the complete stereo and quad recordings. Hubert Tubbs
Hubert Tubbs is an American vocalist, singer, and songwriter of soul, funk, and gospel and has cooperated with a number of music acts. His debut introduction was as a lead vocalist for the band Tower of Power (also known as TOP), an American R&B-based band, originating in Oakland, California. In 1975 he replaced Lenny Williams, who had fronted the band between early 1973 and late 1974. Tubbs became lead vocalist for TOP's 1975 album '' In the Slot'' and again appearing as lead singer for the band's 1976 tour and live album ''Live and in Living Color''. Red Bull Music Academy
The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals that was founded in 1998 by Red Bull GmbH. The main five-week event is held in a different city each year. The public portion of its program is a festival of concerts, art installations, club nights and lectures by influential figures in contemporary music. The other part of the program is by invitation only and is held in a building that has been custom-fitted with a large recording studio, a lecture hall, a radio booth and 8–12 bedroom-sized studios.
