This is a list of regiments from the state of Tennessee that fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865). The list of Tennessee Confederate Civil War units is shown separately. Although Tennessee was officially a Confederate state in the conflict, the state would furnish the most units of soldiers for the Union Army than any other state within the Confederacy, totaling approximately 31,092 white troops and 20,133 black troops. Flag Of The United States (1863-1865)
The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the ''American flag'' or the ''U.S. flag'', consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the "union") bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows, where rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternate with rows of five stars. Memphis Battery Light Artillery (African Descent)
The Memphis Battery Light Artillery (African Descent) was an artillery battery that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The unit was also called 1st Tennessee Battery (African Descent). Service The Memphis Battery Light Artillery (African Descent) was organized at Memphis, Tennessee and mustered in for three years on October 31, 1863 under the command of Captain Carl A. Lamberg. As was custom at the time, the battery was designated the Memphis Battery (Colored) Light Artillery. The regiment was originally designated 12th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, but was changed by order of Governor Andrew Johnson on December 31, 1863. The 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 8th Tennessee Cavalry was organized August 1863 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, by consolidation of five companies that were organized June 30 through August 14, 1863, for the 10th Tennessee Cavalry and seven companies recruited at large in Tennessee for the 5th East Tennessee Cavalry. The regiment mustered in for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel Jesse H. Strickland, and was frequently referred to as the 5th East Tennessee Cavalry. The 6th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was also known as the 1st West Tennessee Cavalry; and was sometimes referred to as Hurst's Worst by their opponents. Service Originally known as the First West Tennessee U.S. Cavalry, the 6th Tennessee Cavalry was organized at Bethel Springs, LaGrange, Bolivar, and Trenton, Tennessee and mustered on 11 August 1862 for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel Fielding Hurst.
