This is a list of notable telephone company buildings. Telephone company buildings have played a key role in the telecommunications industry for more than a century. In 2008 it was stated that "the job for which these unassuming but ubiquitous brick houses were built, and the technology within them, are changing dramatically. In fact, it's tough to say what the CO will look like 10 years from now." Some challenges are "far higher power densities, heat dissipation requirements and power feeds than we ever built those locations for in the past," said Pieter Poll, chief technology officer for Qwest Communications. Mountain States Telephone And Telegraph Company Building (Meridian, Idaho)
__NOTOC__ The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company Building in Meridian, Idaho, is a 1-story commercial office constructed of reinforced concrete, stucco, and brick in 1928. The building features a short, modest tile roof above its Main Street entrance, indicating a Spanish Revival design influence. The Main Street exposure is clad with brick veneer, and above the entrance is a corbelled brick frieze band. A masonry garage was added at the rear of the building in 1948. The garage was remodeled in 1998. The building was constructed by local contractors William Heikes, Gus Scholin, and William Howry from plans provided by the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The Interior Telephone Company Building is a historic structure located in Grinnell, Iowa, United States. Iowa was one of the leading Midwest states to adopt the telephone as a means of communication. By 1920 86% of the state's farms had a telephone. Union Electric Telephone & Telegraph
The Union Electric Telephone & Telegraph is a historic building located in a small-scale commercial area just north of downtown Davenport, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. History Telephone service in the city of Davenport was initiated in 1878 when a private line was installed between the Davenport Water Company office and plant. The following year 36 subscribers in Davenport, Rock Island and Moline, Illinois were hooked up to a switchboard. That area was expanded to 41 towns along the Mississippi River by the Western Telephone Company in 1881. Iowa Telephone and Telegraph was organized the next year and started to serve Davenport residents. Union Electric Telephone and Telegraph entered the market in 1902 and they built this building in 1910. They had about 1,400 customers, but they ceased operations the following year. Blackstone House and Martinsville Telephone Company Building, also known as Cure and Hensley Mortuary, consists of two historic buildings located at Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana. The buildings were connected in the early 1960s. The house was built in 1860, and is a two-story, Gothic Revival style brick building with a steep cross-gable roof. A Queen Anne style wraparound porch with corner turret was added in 1890. The Martinsville Telephone Company Building was built in 1927, and is a one-story, flat roofed, Tudor Revival style "oriental brick" and limestone building. It features a crenellated parapet. Swedish American Telephone Company Building
The Swedish American Telephone Company Building is a historic structure in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Built in the later 1890s, the factory differs from other industrial buildings of its day because of its ornate facade. It was home to medical supplier Betz & Co. (1895–1905), the Swedish American Telephone Company (1905–1923), and the Denoyer-Geppert Co. (1923–1985). History The Ravenswood Land Company purchased along the Chicago & North Western tracks in Edgewater in 1868. At the time, the railroad had stops to the north at Rosehill Cemetery and to the south at Ravenswood Manor. In 1875, the railroad opened a stop at Summerdale, west of this site. Plans were in place to develop a residential community there by 1890. The neighborhood became known as Andersenville by its early Norwegian settlers—later Swedish settlers changed the name to Andersonville, and the Summerdale name fell into disuse.
