Tamil Cinema
Tamil cinema, also known as Kollywood is a part of Indian Cinema; primarily engaged in production of motion pictures in the Tamil language. Based out of the Kodambakkam neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is popularly called ''Kollywood'' - a portmanteau of the words Kodambakkam and Hollywood. The first Tamil silent film, ''Keechaka Vadham'', was directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1918. The first Tamil talking feature film, ''Kalidas'', a multilingual directed by H M Reddy was released on 31 October 1931, less than seven months after India's first talking motion picture ''Alam Ara''. By the end of the 1930s, the legislature of the State of Madras passed the Entertainment Tax Act of 1939. Jupiter Pictures
Jupiter Pictures ( ta, ஜுபிடர் பிக்ச்சர்ஸ்) was an Indian feature film production company founded in Coimbatore in 1934 by M. Somasundaram (popularly known as "Jupiter Somu") and S.K. Mohideen. Jupiter Pictures was a major production house with 46 releases with 36 films released in Tamil, 5 in Telugu, 2 each in Kannada and Hindi and one joint release in Tamil and Telugu. In the late 40s and early 50s, they operated out of Central Studios in Coimbatore. Following the closure of the studio, they relocated to Chennai and took over Neptune Studio in Adayar which would later become Sathya Studios. In Chennai, the Jupiter Pictures office operated from a leased historic and palatial building in Mylapore known as "Mangala Vilas". A. S. A. Sami directed most of his films with Jupiter Pictures. Kasturi Siva Rao
Kasturi Siva Rao (6 March 1913 - 24 February 1966) was an Indian actor, comedian, playback singer, producer and director known for his works in Telugu cinema. ''Mayalamari'' () is a 1951 Indian Telugu-language fantasy film, produced by A.N.R.Gopala Krishnan under the Aswini Pictures banner and directed by P. Sridhar. It stars Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi, with music composed by P. Adinarayana Rao. The film was simultaneously released in Tamil as ''Maayakkari'' ( 1951). Plot Princess Indumati (Anjali Devi) the heir princess of a kingdom falls for a valiant soldier Pratap (ANR). Swaminathan Vaidyanathan (26 June 1904—11 January 1963), known by his stage name Serukulathur Sama, was an Indian stage and film actor who was primarily known for playing the role of the Hindu god Krishna in Tamil language Hindu mythological films of the 1930s and 1940s. Anjali Devi
Anjali Devi (; 24 August 1927 – 13 January 2014) was an Indian actress, model and producer in Telugu and Tamil films. She was well known for her role as the Devi Sita in ''Lava Kusa'' as well as for the titular roles in movies like Chenchu Lakshmi, '' Suvarna Sundari'' and '' Anarkali''. Early life Anjali Devi was born in Peddapuram, East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, India, as Anjamma. She changed her name to Anjani Kumari when acting in dramas. Later, director C. ''Marmayogi'' () is a 1951 Indian Tamil-language swashbuckler film directed by K. Ramnoth and produced by M. Somasundaram. An adaptation of the novel ''Vengeance'' by Marie Corelli and William Shakespeare's play ''Macbeth'', the film was shot simultaneously in Hindi as ''Ek Tha Raja'' (). It stars M. G. Ramachandar, Anjali Devi and Madhuri Devi, with S. V. Sahasranamam, Serukalathur Sama (playing the title role), N. Seetharaman, S. A. Natarajan, M. N. Nambiar and M. Pandari Bai in supporting roles. Lalitha (16 December 1930 – 1982) was an Indian actress and dancer. She was the eldest of the " Travancore Sisters"—Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini. She started her acting career in the 1948 Tamil film '' Adhithan Kanavu'' and has acted in movies of different Indian languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. She entered films before her sisters, concentrating more on Malayalam films, and was mostly cast in vamp roles. Padmini Ramachandran (12 June 1932 – 24 September 2006) was an Indian actress and trained Bharatanatyam dancer, who acted in over 250 Indian films. She acted in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Russian language films. Padmini, with her elder sister Lalitha and her younger sister Ragini, were called the "Travancore sisters". Early life Padmini was born and raised in Trivandrum (present-day Thiruvananthapuram), in what was then the princely state of Travancore (now the Indian state of Kerala) to a Malayali-speaking family.
