Orpheum Lofts
The Orpheum Lofts (originally the Title and Trust Building) is an 11-story high-rise building in Phoenix, Arizona, designed in Art Deco style by local architects Lescher & Mahoney. It was the largest office building in Arizona at the time of its construction in 1930. The grand opening took place on January 31, 1931. History The building is located at 114 West Adams Street in downtown Phoenix. The bricks used in the facade were specially made in California and are progressively lighter in color from bottom to top. A neon sign located on the north side that advertised the 'Phoenix Titles & Trust Co' was a prominent feature for many years. The site was originally occupied by the 2-story O'Neill Building which was constructed around 1900 and housed early Phoenix lawyers O'Neill and McKean, and later the Arizona Industrial Congress. Luhrs Tower is an Art Deco skyscraper office building in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It is located at the southeast corner of First Avenue and Jefferson Street, on the south side of the former Patriots Square Park. Architecture The building was built in 1929 by George Luhrs Jr., a prominent local Phoenix native, Stanford Law School graduate, World War I US Army 2nd Lt., businessman, and son of George Luhrs Sr., Phoenix City Councilman from 1881 to 1885. The tower reaches a height of 185 ft (56 m). Luhrs Tower has 14 stories, with symmetrical setbacks at the 8th and 11th floors. Luhrs Tower was designed in the Art Deco style by the architectural firm of Trost & Trost in El Paso, Texas. It bears a considerable resemblance to the firm's O. T. Bassett Tower located in El Paso. The Westward Ho is a high-rise building in Phoenix, Arizona. The 16-story building, which is 208 ft (63m) to the roof, held the title of tallest building in Arizona for over 30 years until the completion of the Meridian Bank Tower in 1960. The building primarily served as a hotel from its grand opening in 1928 until its official closure on April 7, 1980. The facility also housed several offices and restaurants, including one on the 16th floor called ''Top of the Ho''. There were also several gathering rooms in the hotel, the ''Turquoise Room'' on the 2nd floor where many marriage receptions were held, and a large convention center adjacent to the main hotel which could seat 1,600 called the ''Thunderbird Room'' where many of Phoenix's big events took place. After the hotel closed in 1980, the new owners converted the building into a subsidized housing complex for the elderly and mobility impaired. Claud W. Beelman (1883 – January 30, 1963), sometimes known as ''Claude Beelman'', was an American architect who designed many examples of Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, and Streamline Moderne style buildings. Many of his buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Biography Beelman was married to Lourene Taft Beelman (b. 1883, Ohio - d. 1948, Ca.). In 1910, he was a draftsman in the state of Indiana. (Cite: U.S. Census Records, State of Indiana, 1910.) It was there they had a daughter, Helen Beelman (b. 1912). By the 1920s, the family had relocated to Los Angeles, and by 1930, they lived in Beverly Hills. The Security Building is a building in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, completed in 1928 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. History The Security Building was constructed for the Security Improvement Company, whose President was prominent Phoenix realtor Dwight B. Heard. From 1897 until his 1929 death, Heard was one of the most powerful men in the state, owning an investment company, a cattle company, and the ''Arizona Republican'' newspaper. The building would serve as a headquarters for produce growers and law firms over the years. In 1958, the ninth-floor penthouse apartment was added, serving as the home of Walter R. Bimson, the chairman of the successful Valley National Bank of Arizona. In 2001, Maricopa County acquired the property, and historical renovations began in 2005 to restore the building.
