German Creek, South Australia
German Creek is a rural locality in south-eastern South Australia, situated in the District Council of Grant. The boundaries were formalised in October 1995 for the long established name. The postcode was originally 5280, but was altered to 5291 in 2004. It was reportedly named for a German who was shepherding in the area. History The German Creek area was offered to the government for closer settlement purposes in 1911; however, while the government purchased the nearby Moorak estate, it declined to purchase land at German Creek, and the area was privately subdivided. It was renamed Benara Creek in 1918, one of many German-themed named places in South Australia to be renamed during World War I; however, it reverted to its original name in 1986. Suttontown (originally Sutton Town) is a north-western suburb of Mount Gambier, a city in the south-east of South Australia. Boundaries for the suburb were created in February 1999 for the “long established name.” It was originally a private subdivision of sections 259 and 265 of the Hundred of Blanche, which were adjacent to the Wandilo and Wireless W roads level crossing of the Kalangadoo railway line. The dwelling known as ‘Pine Hall’ is listed as a state heritage place on the South Australian Heritage Register. Mount Schank, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Mount Schank is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and south of the municipal seat of Mount Gambier in the south-east of the state. British colonisation of the area began in 1842 when brothers Edward and Fortescue Arthur (sons of Sir George Arthur) established the Mount Schank Station. The Arthur brothers were in continuous conflict with the local Bungandidj people from the time of their arrival. Many of their shepherds absconded, horses were speared and hundreds of their sheep were taken. The brothers had to do much of the shepherding work themselves and often engaged in close combat with "the Blacks". On one occasion Fortescue was slightly wounded after being speared. After capturing and chaining up a Bungandidj man, Edward forced him to reveal the location of their camp. __NOTOC__ Mingbool is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide adjoining the border with the state of Victoria and about north-west of the municipal seat of Mount Gambier. Boundaries for the locality were created in February 1999 for the “long established name.” Its name is derived from the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Mingbool and ultimately from an aboriginal word for “water.” Mingbool’s western boundary aligns with the route of the Riddoch Highway while its eastern boundary is the state border. The principal land use in the locality is primary production. Two parcels of land in its south-west corner located close to both the Riddoch Highway and the Mount Gambier Airport in the adjoining locality of Wandilo are zoned for industrial purposes. Yahl is a south-eastern suburb of Mount Gambier The area around present day Yahl were inhabited by the local Bungandidj people. Yahl is the aboriginal word for "waters, much water". __NOTOC__ Dingley Dell Conservation Park (formerly known as the Dingley Dell National Pleasure Resort) is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state's south east in the gazetted locality of Port MacDonnell about north-west of the town centre of Port MacDonnell and about south of the city centre in Mount Gambier. The conservation park occupies land in Part Section 138 of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of MacDonnell. The land contains the cottage occupied by the poet, Adam Lindsay Gordon from 1864 to 1866. Adam Lindsay Gordon (19 October 1833 – 24 June 1870) was a British-Australian poet, horseman, police officer and politician. John Ellis (pastoralist)
John Ellis (c. 1803 – 22 March 1873) generally known as "Captain Ellis", was a pastoralist and businessman prominent in the early days of South Australia. He was a son of Sarah (?) and Thomas Ellis, an Oxford clergyman of the Church of England. Career He arrived in South Australia from England on the ''Buckinghamshire'' on 22 March 1839, listed as "Captain Ellis", though on what basis it is not known, and in company of his brother George Ellis. In July 1839 he and his longtime friend Captain William Allen purchased two thirds of "Milner Estate" near Port Gawler from George Milner Stephen, the misrepresentation of which transaction was to haunt Stephen in later years. In 1855 he purchased Allen's share. This area includes the land later known as Buckland Park, which he sold to Dr. J. H. Browne and Col. P. J. Browne in 1856. The South Australian Company, also referred to as the South Australia Company, was formed in London on 9 October 1835, after the '' South Australia (Foundation) Act 1834'' had established the new British Province of South Australia, with the South Australian Colonization Commission set up to oversee implementation of the Act.
