Montserrat
Montserrat ( ) is a British Overseas Territories, British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish diaspora, Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Howard Fergus
Sir Howard Archibald Fergus (born 22 July 1937) is a Montserratian author and historian. He was born at Long Ground in Montserrat. He attended Bethel Primary School, Montserrat Secondary School, Erdiston Teachers College in Barbados, the University College of the West Indies (London), the Universities of Bristol and Manchester, and finally the University of the West Indies (UWI), earning a PhD in 1978. He retired from the University in 2004 as Professor of Eastern Caribbean Studies. Fergus has written and edited more than 14 books, including several works on Montserratian history and society. His scholarly works have been published in a number of international journals and he is also an established poet. Fergus was winner of The Caribbean Writer Poetry Prize in 1992 and of the David Hough Literary Prize for an author residing in the Caribbean in 2002. Joseph Meade (Montserrat)
Joseph Michael Meade (1839 – 14 July 1900) was an Irish businessman and politician. He was born in Dublin, son of Michael Meade of Great Brunswick St., a catholic and founder of the building and contracting firm of Meade, Michael & Son. Joseph entered the family firm and on his father's death in 1866, and took over as head and greatly expanded it. He eventually employed 900 men and was contracted for major projects. He was the chairman of numerous boards including the Hibernian Bank and the Globe insurance company, he used his wealth and position to enhance his civic standing. In 1886 he was elected to Dublin Corporation as alderman for Trinity ward, a position he held until his death, and in 1889 he was made Sheriff of Dublin City. A staunch nationalist, he contributed financially to the Home Rule League and after the split in 1890, he remained a supporter of Charles Stewart Parnell. Teresina Bodkin
Teresina Bodkin is a Montserrat teacher and civil servant who became the first woman Speaker of the Legislative Council of Montserrat. Bodkin was born on Montserrat and she worked as a secondary school maths teacher who went on to be Montserrat's Director of Statistics, She held that role for 15 years. Shirley Osborne
Shirley Osborne is a politician in Montserrat. She was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Montserrat between September 2014 and October 2019. She is the daughter of the late John Osborne, a former Chief Minister of Montserrat. Osborne trained as a teacher and in 1995 received an MBA from Simmons School of Management. She has served as Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Centre in St Peters.
