There are hundreds of chicken breeds in existence. Domesticated for thousands of years, distinguishable breeds of chicken have been present since the combined factors of geographical isolation and selection for desired characteristics created regional types with distinct physical and behavioral traits passed on to their offspring. The physical traits used to distinguish chicken breeds are size, plumage color, comb type, skin color, number of toes, amount of feathering, egg color, and place of origin. They are also roughly divided by primary use, whether for eggs, meat, or ornamental purposes, and with some considered to be dual-purpose. Gallina Empordanesa
The Gallina or Largo-Gallina culture was an occupation sequence during the pre- Hispanic period in the American Southwest from approximately 1050 to 1300. The culture was located in north-central New Mexico roughly north of the Jemez Mountains, and was named after the Rio Gallina (and Largo Canyon), which runs through the region. Ancestry The Gallina are tentatively linked to the Rosa Phase of the Ancestral Puebloans.Ford et al. 1972 Evidence indicates a connection to the Rosa people, due to similar skills such as basket weaving, black on white pottery, and architecture. Pita Pinta
The Pita Pinta Asturiana is a Spanish breed of chicken. It is the only chicken breed indigenous to the principality of Asturias, in north-western Spain. Etymology The name comes from the Asturian language, in which ''pita'' means "hen" and ''pinta'' means "painted" or "mottled". History The breed belongs to the Atlantic branch of domestic chickens and has common origins with other chicken breeds in the north of Spain, such as the Euskal Oiloa of the Basque Country. With the industrialisation of egg production in Asturias in the 1950s and 1960s, breed numbers fell dramatically, almost to the point of extinction. Recovery of the breed began between 1980 and 1990. A breeders' association, the Asociación de Criadores de la Pita Pinta Asturiana, was founded in 2003; its 52 members have a total of 1842 birds. Firá ( el, Φηρά, pronounced ) is the modern capital of the Greek Aegean island of Santorini (Thera). The Penedesenca is a Spanish list of chicken breeds, breed of chicken originating in the Autonomous communities of Spain, autonomous community of Catalonia, in the area around Vilafranca del Penedès, the principal town of the historical Penedès region. History It is not known for how long country people in Catalonia have raised chickens that laid dark brown eggs. The first documentation of them is from 1928, when attempts were made to avert the extinction of the type. In 1932 selection of a black type was begun by a group of breeders in a town near Vilafranca del Penedès.
