Thessaloniki (regional Unit)
Thessaloniki ( el, Μητροπολιτική Περιοχή Θεσσαλονίκης ''Mitropolitiki Periohi Thessaloníkis'', ''Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki'') is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia and its capital is the city of Thessaloniki. Geography The regional unit stretches from the Thermaic Gulf in the southwest to the Strymonic Gulf in the east. Two bodies of water are located in the north, Lake Koroneia in the heart of the regional unit and Lake Volvi in the east. There are farmlands throughout the west and southwest, with fewer in the northeast, north and along the Axios River valley. Mountainous areas include the Chortiatis in the west-central part, the Vertiskos in the north and parts of the Kerdylio mountains in the northeast. Ano Scholari ( el, Άνω Σχολάρι) is a village of the Thermi municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was part of the municipality of Mikra. Chalastra
Chalastra ( el, Χαλάστρα) is a town and former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Before 1926, it was known as Κουλουκιά - ''Kouloukia'' ( bg, Кулакия - ''Kulakiya''). It was renamed to ''Chalastra'' in 1926, to Πύργος - ''Pyrgos'' in 1955 and back to ''Chalastra'' in 1980. Since the local government reform of 2011 it has been part of the municipality Delta, of which it is a municipal unit. The town is located 20 km west from the city of Thessaloniki, on the north side of Greek National Road 1, near the Axios river and the Thermaic Gulf. The municipal unit of Chalastra consists of the two communities of Chalastra itself and Anatoliko. The population was 9,859 inhabitants according to the 2011 census, most of them working in agriculture and small industry. Avgi ( el, Αυγή) is a village of the Lagkadas municipality, northern Greece. Before the 2011 local government reform it was part of the municipality of Sochos. Asvestochori, Thessaloniki
Asvestochori ( el, Ασβεστοχώρι) is a small town and a community of the Pylaia-Chortiatis municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was part of the municipality of Chortiatis, of which it was a municipal district. The 2011 census recorded 6,393 inhabitants in the community. The community of Asvestochori covers an area of 34.344 km2. Under the Turkish rule name of the town was called ''Kireç'' (lit. ''lime''). Assiros
Assiros ( gr, Άσσηρος, before 1926: Γιουβέσνα - ''Giouvesna'', bg, Гвоздово, Gvozdovo) is a village and a former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lagkadas, of which it is a municipal unit. The 2011 census recorded 1,975 inhabitants in the village of Assiros, 2,216 inhabitants in the community and 3,861 inhabitants in the municipal unit. The community of Assiros covers an area of 55.369 km2, while the respective municipal unit covers an area of 76.657 km2. Asprovalta
Asprovalta ( el, Ασπροβάλτα, ''Asproválta,'' ) is a town in the regional unit of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. It was the seat of the Agios Georgios municipality. Since the implementation of the Kallikratis Plan in January 2011, Asprovalta belongs to the Municipality of Volvi. Its population numbers 2,838 people. History Near the modern town, the ruins of a Roman station of the Via Egnatia are preserved which was called Pennana. According to a manuscript of Simonopetra monastery in Mount Athos, Asprovalta was built in the 16th century. Its first name was Aspra Valta. After the Asia Minor Disaster, 54 families from Erenköy of Troas (near the ancient city of Ophryneion) were installed forcefully in Asprovalta. Arethousa ( el, Αρέθουσα) is a village and a community and a municipal unit of the Volvi municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was part of the municipal unit of Arethousa was an independent municipality. Ardameri
Ardameri ( el, Αρδαμέρι) is a village in the regional unit of Thessaloniki of Greece, at the foot of Mount Chortiatis, on the site of the medieval settlement of Ardamerion (Αρδαμέριον). History Ardamerium itself was destroyed during the Ottoman conquest of Thessaloniki in 1430. It was again destroyed in the 1821 suppression of the Macedonian uprising, led by Emmanouel Pappas, during the Greek War of Independence. The modern village is situated 38 km east of Thessaloniki. It is part of the municipality of Koroneia, which also includes the villages of Agios Vasileios, Gerakarou, Vasiloudi and Lagkadikia. It is a traditional Greek village with scattered houses and a maze of pathways often leading to a dead end. The village has some 900 registered voters, but only 125 permanent inhabitants.
