Lemnos (regional Unit)
Lemnos ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Λήμνου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of North Aegean. The regional unit covers the islands of Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and a few smaller, uninhabited islands, in the Aegean Sea. Administration As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Lemnos was created out of part of the former Lesbos Prefecture. It is subdivided into 2 municipalities. Livadochori, Lemnos
Livadochori ( el, Λιβαδοχώρι) is a village and a community in the Greek island of Lemnos, part of the municipal unit Nea Koutali. In 2011 its population was 237 for the village, and 373 for the community, which includes the village Poliochni. It is situated in the central part of the island, 1 km northwest of Kallithea, 2 km north of Nea Koutali, 7 km northwest of Moudros and 12 km northeast of Myrina. The Lemnos International Airport is 3 km east. Population History Under the name Livadochorion or Livatochorion it was first mentioned in 1355 in a document of the Philotheou monastery, Mount Athos. Since then it has repeatedly been mentioned under the same name in maps (including Buondelmonti's map in 1418) and books, suggesting continuous existence of the village. Romanou
Romanou ( el, Ρωμανού) is a village and a community on the island of Lemnos, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Moudros. The community consists of the village Romanou and the deserted rural settlement Komi. Romanou is southwest of Repanidi, southeast of Lychna and northeast of Moudros. Komi The settlement Komi is situated on a low hill northeast of Romanou. In the late 19th century, the remains of an ancient temple of Heracles were found near the village. The German archaeologist Fredrich photographed the ruins and estimated that the temple had a size of . The ancient temple was succeeded by a Byzantine settlement with a church, as shown by the remains of walls and marble that can be found in today's farming settlement. Most of the remains were used for construction, and already in 1918 nearly nothing remained from the ancient temple. Italian archaeologists have found ancient tombs near the site of the temple. Repanidi
Repanidi ( el, Ρεπανίδι) is a village and a community in the northeast of the island of Lemnos, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Moudros. It is located 2 km northeast of Romanou, 3 km west of Kontopouli, 3 km east of Lychna, 6 km northeast of Moudros and 21 km northeast of Myrina. In 2011 its population was 266 people. Its elevation is 30 m. Population History The village was first mentioned as Repanidion in 1285 in a census record of the monastery ''Pteris'', that was located near Tsimandria, southwestern Lemnos. Among others it had a chapel known as Odigitria. The name probably comes from a plant called "rapanida". In 1418, Buondelmonti mentioned the village as Rapagnidi. Belon wrote in 1548 that the village was situated near a port known as ''Ekato Kefalon'' (Εκατό Κεφαλών = "The Hundred Heads"). This port was also known to 16th-century Ottoman geographer Piri Reis. Portianou
Portianou (Greek: Πορτιανού) is a village on the Greek island of Lemnos, located northeast of Myrina. Its population was 314 in 2011. Geography * Neo Pedino * Palaio Pedino, southwest * Portianou is 2 kilometers from the beach called "Xerolimni" Population The name Originally the village was located further west near the area known as Ayios Spyridon, where we find remains of a cemetery and traces of old houses. According to old testaments, which cannot be verified, about three centuries ago a plague forced the population to move the village to its present position. In any event, the village’s name is not mentioned in any record kept by the Byzantine monasteries in Lemnos, as is the case with most other villages in the island. The first encounter of the name can be traced in 1785 on a map by ''Choiseul-Gouffier'' with the name of Portiano, a fact that leads us to conclude that the village was actually established three centuries ago. Plaka, Lemnos
Plaka ( el, Πλάκα) is a village in the northeasternmost part of the island of Lemnos, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Moudros. In 2011 its population was 310 people. The island of Imbros in Turkey is just 24 km northeast. It is situated somewhere in the middle of the straight line between Troy and Mount Athos. Some believe that it is the ''Ermaion lepas'' of the ancient, through which was transmitted with fire the news of the sack of Troy to Argos and Mycenae. Although the edge has an elevation of just 70 m, the cape comes deep into the sea and it is easily seen from those two areas. Therefore, in 1912 a 30 m high rotating lighthouse was built with a luminous range of . Plaka takes its name from the nearby cape Plaka, the northeasternmost point of Lemnos. Panagia, Lemnos
Panagia ( el, Παναγία) is a village in the northeastern part of the island of Lemnos, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Moudros. In 2011 its population was 383 people, including the small village Kortisonas (pop. 2). Population History West of the village, in a small port near Cape Sotiras, an ancient site has been found. At the southern end of the bay a stele from the 4th century BC has been found, that reads: ''BENDIDORA METROPHANOU GERGISIOU''. In medieval texts the location was mentioned as the ''valley of Saint Saviour''. The map of the Italian traveller Buondelmonti (1418) mentions a chapel ''Sotira''. A coastal settlement known as Sotira in northeastern Lemnos was mentioned on maps of other travellers including Belon (1588) and Dapper (1688). Neo Pedino
Pedino ( el, Πεδινό) is a community on the Greek island of Lemnos, Greece. It consists of the villages Vounaria, Neo Pedino and Palaio Pedino, and the uninhabited island Alogonisi. It is part of the municipal unit of Nea Koutali. In 2011 its population was 268. Geography Pedino is situated in the central part of the island of Lemnos, west of the gulf of Moudros. It is 1.5 km southwest of Nea Koutali, 1 km northeast of Portianou and 11 km east of Myrina. The small uninhabited island Alogonisi, in the gulf of Moudros, has an area of 286 hectares and a perimeter of 2,895 m. Population History Under the older name Pesperagou (Πεσπεράγου), the village was mentioned in the late 14th century. The origin of the name is unknown. One theory is that it could come from a Turkish landowner named Pesper-Aga. But the name predates the Turkish invasion of Lemnos. Nea Koutali
Nea Koutali ( el, Νέα Κούταλη) is a municipal unit on the island of Lemnos, North Aegean, Greece. Located in the south central portion of the island with a land area of , it accounts for about 15.9% of the island's area, making it the smallest of the four municipal units on Lemnos. The seat of government is the village of Kontias (population 572 as of the 2011 census), while its next largest town is Nea Koutali with 442 people. Nea Koutali's total population as of 2011 was 2,526.
