Charles Floquet
Charles Thomas Floquet (; 2 October 1828 – 18 January 1896) was a French lawyer and statesman. Biography He was born at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ( Basses-Pyrénées). Charles Floquet is the son of Pierre Charlemagne Floquet and Marie Léocadie Etcheverry, daughter of Thomas Etcheverry, Deputy Mayor of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry, and Marthe Harismendy. In 1869 he married Hortense Kestner, born 31 may 1840 in Thann (Haut-Rhin), died in 1913 in Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine), daughter of Charles Kestner, chemist, industrialist and politician. He studied law in Paris, and was called to the bar in 1851. The ''coup d'état'' of that year aroused the strenuous opposition of Floquet, who had, while yet a student, given proof of his republican sympathies by taking part in the fighting of 1848. Adolphe Maujan
''Adolphe'' is a classic French novel by Benjamin Constant, first published in 1816. It tells the story of an alienated young man, Adolphe, who falls in love with an older woman, Ellénore, the Polish mistress of the Comte de P***. Their illicit relationship serves to isolate them from their friends and from society at large. The book eschews all conventional descriptions of exteriors for the sake of detailed accounts of feelings and states of mind. Constant began the novel on 30 October 1806, and completed it some time before 1810. While still working on it he read drafts to individual acquaintances and to small audiences, and after its first publication in London and Paris in June 1816 it went through three further editions: in July 1816 (new preface), July 1824 in Paris (restorations to Ch. 8, third preface), and in 1828. Athanase Bassinet
Athanase-Henri Bassinet (16 May 1850 - 12 February 1914) was a laborer who entered politics and became a senator of France from 1899 to 1914. Early years Athanase-Henri Bassinet was born in Chantôme, Indre, on 16 May 1850. His family was in modest circumstances. While very young he went to Paris to work as a laborer. He became a mason's assistant, rose to become a foreman and then became a public works contractor. He served in the forces of the Seine in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. In the election of 27 April 1873 Bassinet was an active member of the Armand Félix Marie Jobbé-Duval, Jobbé-Duval committee that supported the candidacy of the Radical Republican Désiré Barodet in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. In 1876 he founded a Republican circle, which was dissolved during the 16 May 1877 crisis. He was elected a councilor of Paris on 15 May 1887 and sat on the Radical Socialist benches.
