The Santiago Metro ( es, Metro de Santiago) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It currently consists of seven lines (numbered 1-6 and 4A), 136 stations, and of revenue route. The system is managed by the state-owned Metro S.A. and is the first and only rapid transit system in the country. The Santiago Metro carries around 2.5 million passengers daily. This figure represents an increase of more than a million passengers per day compared to 2007, when the ambitious Transantiago project was launched, in which the metro plays an important role in the public transport system serving the city. Its highest passenger peak was reached on 2 May 2019, reaching 2,951,962 passengers. In June 2017 the government announced plans for the construction of Line 7, connecting Renca in the northwest of Santiago with Vitacura in the northeast. NS 93
The NS 93 (Neumático Santiago 1993) is the third generation of rubber tired rolling stock used on the Santiago Metro system. The trains were manufactured by GEC Alsthom in 1996 and went into operation in 1997. Originally designed for use on Line 5, the trains first operated on Line 2 prior to the opening of Line 5, and today work on the lines 1 and 5. Features The NS 93 series is based on the design of MP 89 series from the Paris Métro, along with sloped ends, automatic doors and through gangways from car to car. However, the NS 93 is slightly taller than the MP 89 to accommodate air conditioning, and they operate in 6 car formations on Line 5 (SN-NP-NNS), 7 car formations on Lines 1 and 5 (SN-NP-NRNS), and 8 car formations on Line 1 (NNS-NRNS). Santiago Metro Line 7
Line 7 is a new rapid transit line due to open on the Santiago Metro, in 2027. Intended to relieve the busy Santiago Metro Line 1, Line 1, the Line 7 will start in Renca in the northwest, passing through the city center, before ending in the borders of Las Condes and Vitacura in the Northeastern zone of Santiago de Chile, northeast. Expected to be finished by 2027, it will add 19 new stations and of track to the system. Franklin Metro Station
Franklin is a transfer station between the Line 2 and Line 6 of the Santiago Metro. Their namesake is the Franklin Neighborhood. The Line 2 station was opened on 31 March 1978 as the southern terminus of the inaugural section of the line, from Los Héroes. On 21 December 1978, the line was extended to Lo Ovalle. The Line 6 station was opened on 2 November 2017 as part of the inaugural section of the line, between Cerrillos and Los Leones. Los Héroes Metro Station
Los Héroes is a rapid transit station of the Santiago Metro system, being an interchange point in between lines 1 and Santiago Metro Line 2. It located at the intersection of Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins and the Norte-Sur branch of the Autopista Central, which is considered the kilometre zero of Chile. The Line 1 station was opened on 15 September 1975 as part of the inaugural section of the line between San Pablo and La Moneda. The Line 2 station was opened on 31 March 1978 as the northern terminus of the inaugural section of this line, to Franklin. On 15 September 1987 the line was extended to Puente Cal y Canto. Escuela Militar Metro Station
Escuela Militar is an underground metro station on the Line 1 of the Santiago Metro, in Santiago, Chile, Santiago, Chile. It is located beneath the cloverleaf-like interchange of Apoquindo Avenue and Américo Vespucio Avenue. The station was opened on 22 August 1980 as part of the extension of the line from Salvador metro station, Salvador to Escuela Militar. It remained the eastern terminus of the Line 1 until 7 January 2010, when the line was extended to Los Dominicos metro station, Los Dominicos, and is named for the nearby Escuela Militar del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins. Alameda (Santiago)
Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins ( en, General Liberator Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue), popularly known as La Alameda (meaning, a street bordered by poplar trees), is the main avenue of Santiago, Chile. It runs east-west in the center of the greater urban area and is long, and it has up to 5 lanes in each direction. It was named after Chile's founding father Bernardo O'Higgins. It was originally a branch of the Mapocho River. History The avenue is located on the former stream bed of a branch of the Mapocho River, which was drying up between 1560 and 1580.
