Cristian Dumitru Popescu
Cristian Dumitru Popescu (born 1964) is a Romanian-American mathematician at the University of California, San Diego. His research interests are in algebraic number theory, and in particular, in special values of L-functions. Education and career The son of historian Dumitru Micu Popescu and biologist Rodica Jerișteanu, Popescu was born in 1964 in Novaci, Gorj County. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Bucharest, he obtained his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1996, with thesis "On a refined Stark conjecture for function fields" written under the direction of Karl Rubin. He became a professor at Johns Hopkins University, after which he moved to his current position as a professor at UC San Diego. Sorin Teodor Popa (24 March 1953) is a Romanian American mathematician working on operator algebras. He is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Biography Popa earned his PhD from the University of Bucharest in 1983 under the supervision of Dan-Virgil Voiculescu, with thesis ''Studiul unor clase de subalgebre ale C^*-algebrelor''. He has advised 15 doctoral students at UCLA, including Adrian Ioana. Honors and awards In 1990 Popa was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Kyoto, where he gave a talk on "Subfactors and Classifications in von Neumann algebras". He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1995. In 2006 he gave a plenary lecture at the ICM in Madrid on "Deformation and Rigidity for group actions and Von Neumann Algebras". Mihnea Popa (born 11 August 1973) is a Romanian-American mathematician at Harvard University, specializing in algebraic geometry. He is known for his work on complex birational geometry, Hodge theory, abelian varieties, and vector bundles. Academic career Popa received his bachelor's degree in 1996 from the University of Bucharest. He studied mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1996 to 1997, and then in 2001 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan under the supervision of Robert Lazarsfeld. His thesis was titled ''Linear Series on Moduli Spaces of Vector Bundles on Curves''. Florian Pop (born 1952 in Zalău) is a Romanian mathematician, a professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. Pop received his Ph.D. in 1987 and his habilitation in 1991, both from the University of Heidelberg. He has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and (from 1996 to 2003) a professor at the University of Bonn prior to joining the University of Pennsylvania faculty.
