Serhetabat
Serhetabat (formerly Gushgy) ( tk, Guşgy; russian: Кушка, Kushka) is a city in Tagtabazar District, Mary Province, Turkmenistan. Serhetabat lies in the valley of the Kushka River. The population was 5,200 in 1991. It is immediately opposite Torghundi, Afghanistan, with which it is connected by a road and a gauge railway. Etymology The name of the city is a Turkmen borrowing from Persian , consisting of two words: () meaning "border" and () meaning "inhabited place" (commonly used as a Persian suffix for naming places, such as Khorramabad, a city in Iran, and Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan). This is a list of cities in Turkmenistan. For a full list of settlements see the list of cities, towns and villages in Turkmenistan. Which municipalities are categorized as "cities" is established by law in Turkmenistan. Cities fall into three categories: one city equivalent to a province (the capital city, Ashgabat), cities "equivalent to a district" ( tk, etrap hukukly), and cities "in a district" ( tk, etrapdaky). By law cities equivalent to a district must have a population of more than 30,000 and must be either a provincial capital or be one of the economic, cultural and administrative centers in its province. Cities "in a district" are subordinated to the district (''etrap'') government and are administered jointly. By law they must have a population of more than 8,000, and must possess industrial enterprises, construction and transport organizations, utilities, municipally owned housing stock, socio-cultural institutions, trade and social services. Andalyp (city)
Andalyp, until 2004 called Ýylanly, and from 2004 to 2022 called Gurbansoltan Eje adyndaky, is a city and capital of Akdepe District in Daşoguz Province, Turkmenistan. Etymology On 9 November 2022 by parliamentary resolution the city was renamed in honor of the poet Nurmuhammet Andalyp. Prior to that, on 6 September 2004 by Parliamentary Resolution 227-II the city was renamed in honor of the mother of President Saparmurat Niyazov, Gurbansoltan Eje. Originally it was named Ilyaly ( Ильялы, the meaning of which is obscure) but by no later than 1992 had been renamed Ýylanly, which in Turkmen means "with snakes". Altyn Asyr is a city in Tejen District, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan. Its main economic activity is cotton farming. Etymology The words ''altyn asyr'' mean "golden age" in Turkmen. The phrase is used to describe the post-Soviet era of Turkmen independence, particularly during the reign of President Saparmurat Niyazov. History The municipality was founded on the basis of the Soviet-era cotton-producing "Tejen" state farm. Following independence, state and collective farms were redesignated villages and towns. The Tejen State Farm was designated a town and initially named Bereket ("fertile").
