The Rajya Sabha, constitutionally the Council of States, is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India. , it has a maximum membership of 245, of which 233 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through open ballots, while the president can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art, literature, science, and social services. The potential seating capacity of the Rajya Sabha is 245 (233 elected, 12 appointed), according to article 80 of the Indian Constitution. Members sit for staggered terms lasting six years, with about a third of the 238 designates up for election every two years, in even-numbered years. The Rajya Sabha meets in continuous sessions, and unlike the Lok Sabha, being the lower house of the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha is not subjected to dissolution. Om Prakash Kohli
Om Prakash Kohli (born 9 August 1935) is an Indian politician and the former Governor of Gujarat from 2014 to 2019. He was the president of the Delhi unit of Bharatiya Janata Party from 1999 to 2000 and had served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2000. He had been the president of the Delhi University Teacher's Association (DUTA) and of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, ABVP. He studied at Ramjas School and Khalsa School, New Delhi. Kohli is a Master of Arts in Hindi from the University of Delhi and was a lecturer at Hansraj College and Deshbandhu College for over 37 years. He was arrested under MISA during The Emergency (India), the Emergency. From 8 September 2016 to 19 January 2018, he held the additional charge of the office of Governor of Madhya Pradesh along with Gujarat. Mehr Chand Khanna (1 June 1897 – 20 July 1970) was an Indian politician who served as the Union Minister for Rehabilitation from 1954 to 1962 and Law Minister from 1954 to 1957.Mr Mohan Lal Saksena was the first Rehabilitation Minister of the Government of India (1948 to 50). Early life and education Mehr Chand Khanna was an ethnic Punjabi born in Peshawar on 1 June 1897 to Karam Chand Khanna, a rich businessman. He had his schooling in Peshawar and graduated from Edwardes College, Peshawar. Khanna also graduated in law and practised for a time as a lawyer. Shanta Vasisht
Shanta Vasisht (born ca. 1926) is an Indian politician. During the 1950s and 1960s she served as minister in the Delhi state government and as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Student years Vasisht studied law at the University of Delhi. Her father, L.D. Vasisht, served as Chief Administrative Officer of the Ministry of Defence. Bhai Mahavir
Bhai Mahavir (30 October 1922 - 3 December 2016) was an Indian politician who was governor of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh between April 1998 and March 2003. He was a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and served as a leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Bharatiya Janata Party. He has authored many books and had served two terms prior to his governorship as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He had an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics and studied Law (LLB) from the University of Delhi. Savita Behen
Savita Behen (1919-2009) was an Indian politician, social worker, educationist and a former member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the bicameral Indian Parliament. She was known to be an advocate of women empowerment and gender equality and was listed among the ''3300 distinguished living women'' of the world by the Council for Parity Democracy in 1990. She was honoured by the Government of India in 1971 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. Vijay Kumar Malhotra (born 3 December 1931) is an Indian politician and a sport administrator. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was born in the Lahore city of Punjab in British India which is now in Pakistan. He was the 4th out of the seven children of Kaviraj Khazan Chand. He represented Delhi Sadar and South Delhi constituencies in the National Capital Territory of Delhi in the 9th Lok Sabha and the 14th Lok Sabha respectively.
