A railway pioneer is someone who has made a significant contribution to the historical development of the railway (US: railroad). This definition includes locomotive engineers, railway construction engineers, operators of railway companies, major railway investors and politicians, of national and international importance for the development of rail transport. Firebox (locomotive)
In a steam engine, the firebox is the area where the fuel is burned, producing heat to boil the water in the boiler. Most are somewhat box-shaped, hence the name. The hot gases generated in the firebox are pulled through a rack of tubes running through the boiler. Steam locomotive fire tube firebox In the standard steam locomotive fire-tube boiler, the firebox is surrounded by water space on five sides. The bottom of the firebox is open to atmospheric pressure, but covered by fire grates (solid fuel) or a firing pan (liquid fuel). If the engine burns solid fuel, like wood or coal, there is a grate covering most of the bottom of the firebox to hold the fire. An ashpan, mounted underneath the firebox and below the grates, catches and collects hot embers, ashes, and other solid combustion waste as it falls through the grates. Rudolf Sanzin (4 June 1874 – 2 June 1922) was an Austrian engineer and locomotive designer. Life Rudolf Sanzin was born in Mürzzuschlag, in the province of Styria, Austria on 4 June 1874. His father was an official with the Austrian Southern Railway or ''Südbahn''. After completing his A levels (''Matura'') he studied at the Graz University of Technology until 1900. The following year he was himself given a job with the ''Südbahn'', but did his doctorate in 1904 at Graz (with a dissertation entitled ''Investigations into the performance of a locomotive and confirmation of the optimum loading of the same''). His subsequent publications caught the attention of the railway ministry, with the result that Karl Gölsdorf recruited him to the ministry, where he worked as a design engineer. Johann Rihosek
Johann Rihosek (5 June 1869 – 21 November 1956) was an Austrian engineer and locomotive designer. He was born in Maków Podhalański, in Austro-Hungarian Galicia (present-day Poland) on 5 June 1869. Rihosek attended the middle school at Olmütz and later studied mechanical engineering at the Vienna Technical University. Career In 1893 he took up his post as a design engineer with the Wiener Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf. From 1897 he worked in the ''Department for Locomotive and Coach Construction'' headed by Karl Gölsdorf within the Imperial Royal Railway Ministry. After Gölsdorf's death in 1916 Rihosek became his successor. Franz Xaver Riepl
Franz Xaver Riepl (29 November 1790 – 25 April 1857) was an important Austrian geologist, railway pioneer and metallurgical specialist. Life Riepl was born in Graz, Styria where his father worked as a building inspector. He attended the mining college in Schemnitz (present-day Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia) and, back in Graz, worked with the famous geologist Friedrich Mohs (1773–1839) at the Joanneum technical college.
