Public art is visually and physically accessible to the public; it is installed in public space in both outdoor and indoor settings. Public art seeks to embody public or universal concepts rather than commercial, partisan or personal concepts or interests. Notably, public art is also the direct or indirect product of a public process of creation, procurement, and/or maintenance. Independent art created or staged in or near the public realm (for example, graffiti, street art) lacks official or tangible public sanction has not been recognized as part of the public art genre, however this attitude is changing due to the efforts of several street artists. George William Hill (sculptor)
George William Hill (1861 in Shipton, Eastern Townships, Quebec – 1934) was a Canadian sculptor. He was known as one of Canada's foremost sculptor during the first half of the 20th century, because of his numerous public memorials. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He traveled to Paris in 1889 to study at the École nationale des beaux-arts and at the Académie Julian, and returned to Montreal in 1894 to open his workshop and begin producing public memorials. Montreal ( ; officially Montréal, ) is the second-most populous city in Canada and most populous city in the Canadian province of Quebec. Founded in 1642 as '' Ville-Marie'', or "City of Mary", it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill around which the early city of Ville-Marie is built.
