Edward D'Oyley
Edward D'Oyley (1617 – 1675) was an English soldier who served as Governor of Jamaica on two occasions. D'Oyley was a Parliamentarian who served in the New Model Army in Wiltshire and in Ireland. In 1654 he sailed to the West Indies as a lieutenant-colonel in General Robert Venables' regiment. Venables had been ordered to the West Indies to advance the Parliamentarian cause and to repel Spanish advances. Once there, Venables raised a local regiment and appointed D'Oyley as its colonel. After the death in 1655 of Major-General Richard Fortescue, D'Oyley was elected commander-in-chief of all the Jamaican forces. Although temporarily displaced by the Cromwellian protegés Robert Sedgwick and William Brayne, command of the forces ultimately devolved completely upon D'Oyley in September 1657. Thomas Lynch (governor)
Sir Thomas Lynch (died 1684) was the English governor of Jamaica on three separate occasions in the 17th century (1663–1664, August 1671–November 1674, and lastly 1682–1684). He was also chief justice of Jamaica for a time. Life He was the son of Theophilus Lynch Esq of Rixton Hall in Lancashire (born 1603), fourth son of William Lynch Esq of Cranbrook, Kent, Cranbrook in Kent, and of his wife Judith, eldest daughter of Royal chaplain and Bishop of London John Aylmer (bishop), John Aylmer. He served under Robert Venables in the army which went out to Jamaica in 1655. In January 1661, after a period back in England he was appointed provost-marshal of the island for life. Peter Beckford (colonial Administrator)
Colonel Peter Beckford (1643–1710) was acting Governor of Jamaica in 1702. He was also a prominent slave owner, plantation owner, and businessman in early British Jamaica. By the time he died, he had accumulated 20 estates, 1,200 slaves and had founded what Noel Deerr described as "perhaps the greatest fortune ever made in planting." Early life Peter was the son of another Peter Beckford, of Maidenhead, England. Sir Thomas Beckford, Sheriff of London was his uncle, as was Captain Richard Beckford, who was trading in Jamaica from 1659. Sir Clifford Clarence Campbell (28 June 189228 September 1991) was a Jamaican educator and politician who served as speaker of the House and President of the Senate. In 1962, after Jamaica achieved independence, he was appointed as the first Jamaica-born and second governor-general of Jamaica, serving in that position for more than a decade. Early life and family Clifford Campbell was born in Petersfield, Jamaica on 28 June 1892, the son of civil servant James Campbell and his wife Blance ( née Ruddock). He was educated at Petersfield Elementary School and Mico Teachers' College. He became a schoolteacher and later was promoted to principal of three schools and headmaster in the parish.
