Premetro
A premetro is a tramway or light railway which includes segments built to rapid transit standards, generally as part of a process of conversion to a metro-standards railway usually by the construction of tunnels in the central city area. History The first city to carry a portion of a streetcar line through the city center in a tunnel was Marseille, France, in 1893, with its Noailles subterranean station (see Marseille tramway). It was initially operated by horse-drawn wagons. The next prominent example was the Tremont Street subway (1897) in Boston, today part of the MBTA Green Line. These early tunnels were intended solely to reduce streetcar congestion on surface streets, not for later conversion to metro service. Kyiv Light Rail or Kyiv Express Tram ( uk, Київський швидкісний трамвай, translit.: ''Kyivs’kyi shvydkisnyi tramvai'') is a light rail rapid transit service that serves the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. The Volgograd Metrotram (Skorostnoy Tramvay, ST) is a light rail surface/subway line operating in Volgograd, Russia. It was inaugurated on 5 November 1984, and had served 50 million passengers per year at the time the 2011 extension was opened. The line consists of 22 stations along the Volga River on a route from the northern suburbs of Volgograd to the city center, with a total length of . Most of the line shares a surface-level right of way with existing tram lines; this section spans a total of . A subway section in the south has five underground stations and an elevated station; this section opened in two stages in 1984 and 2011, and spans . There are two routes, ST and ST-2. Kraków Fast Tram ( pl, Krakowski Szybki Tramwaj) is a light rail network being developed in Kraków. It consists of several modernized or purpose-built tram tracks with radio-controlled absolute priority on crossings, a long tunnel under Kraków Główny railway station with two underground stops and a long overpass over Kraków Płaszów rail station. Unlike many light rail systems, Kraków Fast Tram is not separate from regular tramway lines: the tracks are a part of the wider "classic" tramway network and are used by ordinary trains, which benefit from moving through a fast tram corridor.
