This article lists political parties in Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago has a de facto two-party system. The People's National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) are the two biggest political parties, and have supplied every Prime Minister since 1991. The PNM has governed Trinidad and Tobago from 1956–86, 1991–95, and 2001 to 2010, and currently serves as the government since 2015. The UNC governed from 1995-2001 and from 2010-2015. The Tobago-based Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) is the third biggest political party, with one assemblymember in the Tobago House of Assembly, since 2022. former PDP Independents currently govern the Tobago House of Assembly since 2022. Trinidad and Tobago (, ), officially the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is the southernmost island country in the Caribbean. Consisting of the main islands Trinidad and Tobago, and numerous much smaller islands, it is situated south of Grenada and off the coast of northeastern Venezuela. The Congress of the People (COP) is a political party in Trinidad and Tobago. Its current political leader is Kirt Sinnette. Its symbol is the "Circle of Circles". History The party was formed on 10 September 2006 by Winston Dookeran, then the embattled Political Leader of the United National Congress announced at a rally that he was leaving the UNC and forming a new party. Dookeran and his supporters had been engaged in internal party feuding with the UNC executive which was loyal to party founder (then chairman and former Leader) Basdeo Panday. Dookeran was soon joined by UNC MPs Ganga Singh (who became the Party Whip) and Manohar Ramsaran. The Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) is a socialist political party in Trinidad and Tobago founded in March 2009. Its logo is the Scales of Justice. Its current leader is David Abdulah, a former government senator and general secretary of the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union. The Independent Liberal Party is a political party of Trinidad and Tobago. It was formed in July 2013, after Jack Warner was not reselected as the candidate for the Chaguanas West by-election for the United National Congress (UNC) party. It was launched at a political rally, in Jubilee Grounds, Pierre Road, Chaguanas. Founder Jack Warner resigned in September, 2015 following the party defeat in the 2015 general election. He was replaced by attorney Rekha Ramjit, who had previously served as the party's chairman, and who defeated Simeon Mahabir in a 10 October 2015 internal party election. Watson Duke
Watson Duke (born 1965) is a Tobagonian politician and trade unionist. He is the current president of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, a political party in Trinidad and Tobago. Duke was born in Tobago and educated at the Scarborough Secondary School. He later attended the University of the West Indies, where he received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations. After graduation, Duke worked as a teacher and later as a trade unionist, serving as the President of the Tobago branch of the Public Services Association (PSA) from 2001 to 2015. In 2013, Duke founded the Tobago Organization of the People (TOP) and was elected as its leader. The TOP is a progressive political party that advocates for greater autonomy for Tobago and the promotion of the island's economic and cultural development. Regionalism is a political ideology that seeks to increase the political power, influence, and/or self-determination of the people of one or more subnational regions. It focuses on the "development of a political or social system based on one or more" regions and/or the national, normative or economic interests of a specific region, group of regions or another subnational entity, gaining strength from or aiming to strengthen the "consciousness of and loyalty to a distinct region with a homogeneous population", similarly to nationalism. More specifically, "regionalism refers to three distinct elements: movements demanding territorial autonomy within unitary states; the organization of the central state on a regional basis for the delivery of its policies including regional development policies; political decentralization and regional autonomy". Kamla Persad-Bissessar ( ; born Kamla Susheila Persad, 22 April 1952), often referred to by her initials KPB, is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian lawyer, politician and educator who is the Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago, political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) political party, and was the sixth Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 26 May 2010 until 9 September 2015. The Third Way is a centrist political position that attempts to reconcile right-wing and left-wing politics by advocating a varying synthesis of centre-right economic policies with centre-left social policies.
