Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. Teamwork, tactical thinking and awareness are also highly important aspects. Water polo is a highly physical and demanding sport and has frequently been cited as one of the most difficult to play. The first two teams of each group were qualified for the semi-finals, while the third and fourth placed team was eliminated. György Kárpáti
György Kárpáti (23 June 1935 – 17 June 2020) was a Hungarian water polo player who competed at the 1952 Summer Olympics, 1956 Summer Olympics, 1960 Summer Olympics, and 1964 Summer Olympics. He is one of eight male athletes who won four or more Olympic medals in water polo, and one of ten male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. Career Kárpáti was born in Budapest, and was a member of the Hungarian team which won the gold medal in the 1952 tournament. He played five matches and scored four goals. Four years later he was a member of the Hungarian team which won again the gold medal in the 1956 Olympic tournament. He played six matches and scored at least six goals (not all scorers are known). Water Polo At The 1964 Summer Olympics
Water polo at the 1964 Summer Olympics was held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo. The gymnasium was built in 1961-1964 as the first indoor pool for Olympic water polo; it also hosted all swimming and diving events and could accommodate over 13,000 people. In the water polo tournament, two teams from each of the four preliminary groups advanced to two semi-finals, and their four winners competed for the medals. The scores from preliminary rounds were taken into account in the semifinals, and the scores from the semifinals were taken into account in the finals. László Jeney
László Jeney (30 May 1923 – 24 April 2006) was a Hungarian water polo player who competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics, 1952 Summer Olympics, 1956 Summer Olympics, and 1960 Summer Olympics. He is one of eight male athletes who won four or more Olympic medals in water polo. He was born in Cluj, Kingdom of Romania and died in Budapest. Jeney was part of the Hungarian team which won the silver medal in the 1948 tournament. He played two matches as goalkeeper. Four years later he was a member of the Hungarian team which won the gold medal in the 1952 Olympic tournament. He played six matches as goalkeeper. At the 1956 Games he won again the gold medal with the Hungarian team. He played two matches as goalkeeper. His last Olympic tournament was in Rome 1960 where he won the bronze medal. Dezső Gyarmati
Dezső Gyarmati (23 October 1927 – 18 August 2013) was a Hungarian water polo player and three-time Olympic champion; he later became the coach of the Hungarian national water polo team. Widely regarded as a "legendary player", Gyarmati was the most decorated player in the history of the sport. Early life and family Dezső Gyarmati was born in Miskolc, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. He married Éva Székely, a swimmer who was the 1952 Olympic champion in the 200-metre breaststroke. Their daughter Andrea Gyarmati has competed as a backstroke and butterfly swimmer; she received two Olympic medals in 1972, and is a one-time world record holder for the 100 metres butterfly. Wally O'Connor
James Wallace O'Connor (August 25, 1903 – October 11, 1950) was an American competition swimmer and water polo player who played internationally for the United States at four Olympiads: at the 1924, 1928, 1932 and 1936. In team sport at the 1924 Summer Olympics, a gold medal was won in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay event. With the national water polo team a bronze medal was won; he played one match. At the 1928 Summer Olympics bronze medal match, they lost to France. He played two matches and scored one goal. At the 1932 Summer Olympics they won a bronze medal. He played all four matches. At the 1936 Summer Olympics they won one and lost two matches in the preliminary group of the water polo tournament. He played all three matches. He was honored as the national flag bearer at the opening ceremonies. In 1976, he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
