Dezső Gyarmati
Dezső Gyarmati (23 October 1927 – 18 August 2013) was a Hungarian water polo player and three-time Olympic champion; he later became the coach of the Hungarian national water polo team. Widely regarded as a "legendary player", Gyarmati was the most decorated player in the history of the sport. Early life and family Dezső Gyarmati was born in Miskolc, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. He married Éva Székely, a swimmer who was the 1952 Olympic champion in the 200-metre breaststroke. Their daughter Andrea Gyarmati has competed as a backstroke and butterfly swimmer; she received two Olympic medals in 1972, and is a one-time world record holder for the 100 metres butterfly. Water Polo At The 1964 Summer Olympics
Water polo at the 1964 Summer Olympics was held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo. The gymnasium was built in 1961-1964 as the first indoor pool for Olympic water polo; it also hosted all swimming and diving events and could accommodate over 13,000 people. In the water polo tournament, two teams from each of the four preliminary groups advanced to two semi-finals, and their four winners competed for the medals. Swimming At The 1972 Summer Olympics
The 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Munich, West Germany, 29 events in swimming were contested. There was a total of 532 participants from 52 countries competing. Perhaps the most spectacular athletic events were in swimming. Mark Spitz had a remarkable run, competing in seven events, winning seven Olympic titles and setting seven world records. In 2008, Michael Phelps matched Spitz's feat of setting seven world records in a single Olympics. Butterfly Stroke
The butterfly (colloquially shortened to fly) is a swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick"). While other styles like the breaststroke, front crawl, or backstroke can be swum adequately by beginners, the butterfly is a more difficult stroke that requires good technique as well as strong muscles. It is the newest swimming style swum in competition, first swum in 1933 and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The peak speed of the butterfly is faster than that of the front crawl due to the synchronous pull/push with both arms and legs, which is done quickly. Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. Andrea Gyarmati
Andrea Gyarmati (born 15 April 1954) is a retired Hungarian swimmer. In 1972, she set a world record in the 100-meter butterfly. At the 1972 Olympics she won a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke, and a bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly. In 1995, following her both parents, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Biography Gyarmati was born in Budapest. Her mother and coach Éva Székely was a 1952 Olympic champion in breaststroke, and her father Dezső Gyarmati was an Olympic champion in water polo. Gyarmati married and later divorced Mihály Hesz, an Olympic champion in canoe. She competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics in eight events in total, and won two individual medals in 1972 (a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke, and a bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly). Breaststroke
Breaststroke is a human swimming, swimming style in which the swimmer is on their chest and the torso does not rotate. It is the most popular recreational style due to the swimmer's head being out of the water a large portion of the time, and that it can be swum comfortably at slow speeds. In most swimming classes, beginners learn either the breaststroke or the freestyle (front crawl) first. However, at the competitive level, swimming breaststroke at speed requires endurance and strength comparable to other strokes. Some people refer to breaststroke as the "frog" stroke, as the arms and legs move somewhat like a frog swimming in the water. Éva Székely
Éva Székely (3 April 1927 – 29 February 2020) was a Hungarian swimmer. She won the gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and the silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics, set six world records, and won 44 national titles. She held the first world record in the 400 m individual medley in 1953. Biography Székely was born in Budapest, Hungary. Her mother was Orthodox Jewish from Upper Hungary, while her father was a Székeler (Transylvanian Magyar). As a child, she competed for a local swim team and in 1941, at 14 years of age, she set a national speed record, although she was barely allowed to start because she was a Jew and was soon was expelled from the team because of her religion. She was excluded from competition for the next four years, and survived the Holocaust partly because she was a famous swimmer. The Hungary men's national water polo team represents Hungary in international men's water polo competitions and is controlled by the Hungarian Water Polo Association.
