A hamlet is a human settlement that is smaller than a town or village. Its size relative to a Parish (administrative division), parish can depend on the administration and region. A hamlet may be considered to be a smaller settlement or subdivision or satellite entity to a larger settlement. Criffel
Criffel is a hill in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. It is high but appears higher because of its great isolation and high prominence. It is a prominent feature in many of the views from the northern Lake District on a clear day. It is surrounded by a host of satellites, including Long Fell, Maidenpap and Bainloch Hill. The slopes of Criffel feature the upland vegetation of heather, bog cotton and blaeberry and are inhabited by skylarks. Loch Kindar sits at the foot of the hill. A new path to the summit is currently finishing construction. Etymology The name Criffel is recorded in 1273 as ''Crufel''. The second element, -''fel'', is either Older Scots or Northern Middle English ''fell'' or Old Norse ''fjall'' 'mountain'. Moniaive ( 'monny-IVE'; gd, Am Moine Naomh, ''"The Holy Moor"'') is a village in the Parish of Glencairn, in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. It stands on the Cairn and Dalwhat Waters, north-west of the town of Dumfries. Moniaive has been named best overall small village in the Nithsdale in Bloom competition five times in a row, from 2006 to 2011. The village streetscape was featured in the 2002 Peter Mullan film ''The Magdalene Sisters''. In 2004, ''The Times'' described the village as one of the 'coolest' in Britain. History Moniaive has existed as a village as far back as the 10th century. Logan Botanic Garden
Logan Botanic Garden is a botanical garden near Port Logan on the Rhins of Galloway, at the south-western tip of Scotland. The Botanic Garden was established in 1869 and was gifted to Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 1969. It is now operated as part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's Living Collection. The area has a mild climate due to the influence of the North Atlantic drift. The combination of this and the sheltered aspect of the gardens enables plants to be cultivated which would not normally survive outdoors in Scotland, with species from as far away as Chile, Vietnam and New Zealand all thriving in Logan's borders.
