Phoenix Roadrunners (WHA)
The Phoenix Roadrunners were a professional ice hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974–75 WHA season, 1974 to 1976–77 WHA season, 1977. They played at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona. The organization folded for financial reasons before the remaining teams in the WHA NHL–WHA merger, merged with the NHL in 1979. The colors of the team were blue and gold. In 1996 the Winnipeg Jets, a former WHA franchise, moved to Phoenix and became the Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes). In 2016, the Coyotes purchased their AHL affiliate (the Springfield Falcons), and moved them to Tucson. The Tucson Roadrunners use a logo very similar to the WHA Roadrunners. David Peter Gorman (born April 8, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 260 games in the World Hockey Association and three games in the National Hockey League between 1975 and 1980. Garry Lariviere
Garry Lariviere (born December 6, 1954) is a Canadian former ice hockey defenceman. Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Lariviere was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round of the 1974 NHL amateur draft but opted to play in the rival World Hockey Association instead. He began his professional career with the Phoenix Roadrunners in 1974, was traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1977 and was one of the players the Nordiques retained when the Nordiques merged into the National Hockey League in 1979. He also played for the Edmonton Oilers. He left the NHL after the 1983 season. He played 3 more years in the AHL for the St. Catharines Saints before retiring as a player. Gary Kurt
Gary David Kurt (born March 9, 1947, in Kitchener, Ontario) is a retired professional ice hockey goaltender. Playing career Kurt played Junior hockey for the Ontario Hockey Association's Kitchener Rangers, at the time owned by the New York Rangers. Later he played two seasons for the Rangers' affiliate in the Central Hockey League, the Omaha Knights. After the 1968–69 season he was acquired by the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League. After another two seasons in the AHL he broke into the NHL with the California Golden Seals, who acquired his rights from the Barons prior to the 1971–72 NHL season. He spent the first half of the season playing for the Golden Seals' affiliate Baltimore Clippers, but was called up to the Seals in January 1972 to replace Lyle Carter as Gilles Meloche's back-up. John Hughes (ice Hockey, Born 1954)
John Spencer Hughes (March 18, 1954 – April 8, 2020) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Career The bulk of his professional career was spent in the World Hockey Association (WHA), where he played from 1974 until 1979 for the Phoenix Roadrunners, Cincinnati Stingers, Houston Aeros, Indianapolis Racers, and Edmonton Oilers. When the WHA folded in 1979, Hughes moved to the National Hockey League (NHL), briefly playing for the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers (who joined the NHL), and New York Rangers. He retired in 1982. Hughes had 18 goals, 130 assists, 148 points and 778 penalty minutes in 372 regular season games in the WHA and two goals, 14 assists, 16 points and 211 penalty minutes in 70 regular season games in the NHL.
