Performance Poetry
Performance poetry is a broad term, encompassing a variety of styles and genres. In brief, it is poetry that is specifically composed for or during a performance before an audience. During the 1980s, the term came into popular usage to describe poetry written or composed for performance rather than print distribution, mostly open to improvisation. History The term ''performance poetry'' originates from an early press release describing the 1980s performance poet Hedwig Gorski, whose audio recordings achieved success on spoken word radio programs around the world. Her band, East of Eden Band, was described as the most successful at music and poetry collaborations, allowing cassettes of her live radio broadcast recordings to stay in rotation with popular underground music recordings on some radio stations. Boonaa Mohammed
Boonaa Mohammed (born April 14, 1987) is a Canadian spoken-word poet and writer of Oromo descent. Early life Mohammed is a second generation Ethiopian immigrant of Oromo ancestry. His Parents came to Canada as political refugees seeking asylum in the country after their involvement with the Oromo Liberation Movement in Ethiopia. He grew up in the down-town Toronto area and was heavily involved in the street life while attending Oakwood Collegiate Institute. He graduated at the top of his class and was named Valedictorian before enrolling in Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and graduating from the Radio and Television Arts program in 2011. Roger Bonair-Agard
Roger Bonair-Agard is a poet and performance artist. He has made numerous television and radio appearances, has led countless workshops and lectures, and has performed his poetry at many US universities as well as at international festivals in Germany, Switzerland, Milan, and Jamaica. He has been accused of sexual abuse by multiple people, including other poets. Biography Born in Trinidad, Bonair-Agard moved to the United States in 1987, intending to begin university and eventually pursue law, but finding himself "instead exploring the seediest sides of New York City life". He studied Political Science at Hunter College, and was about to take the Law School Admission Test when he decided to concentrate on poetry rather than a law career. Derrick C
A derrick is a lifting device composed at minimum of one guyed mast, as in a gin pole, which may be articulated over a load by adjusting its guys. Most derricks have at least two components, either a guyed mast or self-supporting tower, and a boom hinged at its base to provide articulation, as in a ''stiffleg'' derrick. The most basic type of derrick is controlled by three or four lines connected to the top of the mast, which allow it both to move laterally and cant up and down. To lift a load, a separate line runs up and over the mast with a hook on its free end, as with a crane. Forms of derricks are commonly found aboard ships and at docking facilities. Some large derricks are mounted on dedicated vessels, and known as floating derricks and sheerlegs. The term derrick is also applied to the framework supporting a drilling apparatus in an oil rig. Nicole Blackman (born November 30, 1971) is a New York City–born performance artist, poet, author, and vocalist. Literary career Blackman is involved in the North American goth, spoken word, and transgressive literature scenes. Blackman self-published three now out-of-print chapbooks: ''Pretty'', ''Sweet'', and ''Nice'', and were collected in Akashic Books' ''Blood Sugar''. Big Poppa E is an American performer of slam poetry. His live performances combine poetry, stand-up comedy, and dramatic monologue. Performance poetry He participated in the 10th Annual Poetry Slam in Chicago as part of the San Francisco team. In that event, he identifies himself as a "Wussy Boy" in introductions of his performance poem ''The Wussy Boy Manifesto'', a humorous rant which champions sensitive men and elevates Duckie from ''Pretty in Pink'' and Lloyd Dobler from '' Say Anything...'' to role models. ''Ms. Magazine'' named him "an icon for effeminate males" and the ''Los Angeles Times'' called him the "leader of a new men's movement." Amiri Baraka (born Everett Leroy Jones; October 7, 1934 – January 9, 2014), previously known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, was an American writer of poetry, drama, fiction, essays and music criticism. He was the author of numerous books of poetry and taught at several universities, including the University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University. Robert Reynolds Ashley (March 28, 1930 – March 3, 2014) was an American composer, who was best known for his television operas and other theatrical works, many of which incorporate electronics and extended techniques. His works often involve intertwining narratives and take a surreal multidisciplinary approach to sound, theatrics and writing, and have been continuously performed by various interpreters during and after his life, including ''Automatic Writing'' (1979) and '' Perfect Lives'' (1983).
