Joseph Calleia
Joseph Calleia ( ; born Joseph Alexander Caesar Herstall Vincent Calleja, August 4, 1897 – October 31, 1975) was a Maltese-born American actor and singer on the stage and in films, radio and television. After serving in the British Transport Service during World War I, he travelled to the United States and began his career on the stage, initially in musical comedy, but later in original Broadway productions such as ''Broadway'' (1926), ''The Front Page'' (1928), ''The Last Mile'' (1930), and ''Grand Hotel'' (1930). Calleia became a star with the play '' Small Miracle'' (1934), his first real role as a villain, and he was put under contract by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824), known simply as Lord Byron, was an English romantic poet and Peerage of the United Kingdom, peer. Anton Buttigieg
Anton Buttigieg, ( mt, Anton Buttiġieġ ; 19 February 1912 – 5 May 1983) was a Maltese political figure and poet. He served as the second president of Malta from 1976 until 1981. Early life Anton Buttigieg was born in Qala, Gozo, on 19 February 1912, the third child of Salvatore and Concetta (née Falzon) Buttigieg. He was educated at the Government Primary School, Qala (from 1916 to 1922), the Gozo Seminary (from 1923 to 1927), St Aloysius' College Malta (from 1928 to 1930) and the University of Malta, where he graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1934, and Doctor of Laws in 1940. Marriages In 1944 he married Censina and had three children – John, Rose and Emanuel. She then died. In 1953 he married Connie Scicluna, who also predeceased him. Vincenzo Bugeja
Vincenzo Bugeja (1820-1890) was a Maltese businessman and philanthropist. Bugeja made his wealth by gambling in the casinos of Europe, from Montecarlo onwards, where he earned the nickname as "the Maltese Matador". He is rumoured to have almost bankrupted the bank in Baden. He married Anna Darbois of Naples; they did not have children. They lived in a stately home on St Barbara Bastion, Valletta. In the second half of the 19th century Bugeja was active in Maltese politics. As member of the Council of Government, he was responsible for several amendments in the criminal and commercial laws of Malta. With his winnings, Bugeja founded charities for the sick and the poor, bequeathing 20,000 pounds for that aim. Since May 1880 he financed the new Conservatorio in Hamrun (which will get his name) so that orphan girls could get boarding and education by the Sisters of Charity. David Bruce (microbiologist)
Major-General Sir David Bruce (29 May 1855 – 27 November 1931) was an Australian-born British pathologist and microbiologist who made some of the key contributions in tropical medicine. In 1887, he discovered a bacterium, now called ''Brucella'', that caused what was known as Malta fever. In 1894, he discovered a protozoan parasite, named ''Trypanosoma brucei'', as the causative pathogen of nagana (animal trypanosomiasis). Working in the Army Medical Services and the Royal Army Medical Corps, Bruce's major scientific collaborator was his microbiologist wife Mary Elizabeth Bruce (''née'' Steele), with whom he published around thirty technical papers out of his 172 papers. In 1886, he was chairman of the Malta Fever Commission that investigated the deadly disease, by which he identified a specific bacterium as the cause. Rużar Briffa
Rużar Briffa (1906–1963) was a Maltese poet and dermatologist, and a major figure in Maltese literature. "I never thought of publishing these poems in a book. Some were written in hard times, others in moments of joy. And I wrote them for myself." These were the poet's words as they appeared in his first collection of poetry, ''Poeżiji'', published in 1971 thanks to his second wife Louisette and his friend P. Valentin Barbara's constant encouragement. Life He was known as the poet "of smallness and simplicity - the best". John Bosco
John Melchior Bosco ( it, Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco; pms, Gioann Melchior Bòsch; 16 August 181531 January 1888), popularly known as Don Bosco , was an Catholic Church in Italy, Italian Catholic priest, educator, writer and saint of the 19th century. George Borg Olivier
Giorgio Borg Olivier, ( mt, Ġorġ Borg Olivier) (5 July 1911 – 29 October 1980) was a Maltese statesman and leading politician. He twice served as Prime Minister of Malta (1950–55 and 1962–71) as the Leader of the Nationalist Party. He was also Leader of the Opposition between 1955–58, and again between 1971–77. Borg Olivier was elected as one of the three Nationalist members of the Council of Government in 1939.
