Liam is a short form of the Irish name Uilliam or the old Germanic name William. Etymology The original name was a merging of two Old German elements: ''willa'' ("will" or "resolution"); and ''helma'' ("helmet"). The juxtaposition of these elements effectively means "helmet of will" or "guardian". When the Frankish Empire was divided, the name developed differently in each region. Liam Blanchfield (born 18 November 1996) is an Irish hurler who plays for Kilkenny Senior Championship club Bennettsbridge and at inter-county level with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left wing-forward. Playing career St. Kieran's College Blanchfield first came to prominence as a hurler with St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny. Having played in every grade as a hurler, he was eventually called up the college's senior team. On 9 March 2014, Blanchfield scored a point when St. Kieran's College suffered a 2–13 to 0–13 defeat by Kilkenny CBS in the Leinster final. Liam Bern (born 6 March 2003) is a South African soccer player who plays as a defender for Cape Town Spurs in the Premier Soccer League. Bern came through the academy of what was then called Ajax Cape Town, joining from Tableview at age 9. His first training session with the senior team of Cape Town Spurs came when he was 15, and he was moved up to the senior team in 2021. Liam Bekric (born 7 January 2001) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer with a vision impairment. Bekric represented Australia for the first time at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Personal Bekric was born on 7 January 2001 in Adelaide, South Australia, to parents Dragan and Tracy, and is brother to Josh, Riley and Darcy. He was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary, degenerative eye condition that results in tunnel vision and can lead to blindness. It was detected when he was six years old. Liam Beckett MBE (born 17 July 1951) is a Northern Irish former football manager and player, who now works as a pundit and radio broadcaster. Playing career Starting his career after a five-year plumbing apprenticeship, Beckett won an Irish League title and Carlsberg Cup with Crusaders, before transferring to Drogheda United in December 1973. In 1975 he moved to Coleraine, before re-joining Crusaders in October 1979.
