The Bangka Belitung Islands ( id, Kepulauan Bangka Belitung) is a Provinces of Indonesia, province of Indonesia. Situated off the southeastern coast of Sumatra, the province comprises two main landmasses—Bangka Island, Bangka and Belitung—and numerous smaller islands. Bangka Belitung is bordered by the Bangka Strait to the west, the Natuna Sea to the north, the Java Sea is to the south and the Karimata Strait to the east. The province's capital and largest city is Pangkal Pinang. Pangkal Pinang
Pangkal Pinang is the capital and largest city of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province in Indonesia. It is located on Bangka Island's east coast, the city is divided into seven districts (''kecamatan'') and has 42 wards (''kelurahan''). It covers an area of and it had a population of 216,893 at the 2020 Census. The city's population density is about 2,426 per square kilometre in 2020. Muhammad Irwansyah is the mayor; he was preceded by Zulkarnain Karim, who served for two terms (2003–2013). The Rangkui River divides the city into two parts, and Jalan Merdeka is its geographic center. Pangkal Pinang's population consists largely of ethnic Malays and Chinese Hakka who came from Guangzhou. Sungai Selan
Sungai Selan is a district (''kecamatan'') of Central Bangka Regency, in the Bangka-Belitung province of Indonesia. History Sungai Selan was the initial point for the spread of Catholicism into Bangka, originating from Catholic Chinese physician Tsjen On Ngie (1795–1871) who moved from Penang into Sungai Selan in 1830, and his house gradually became a makeshift chapel with statues and prayer rooms. By 1853, a resident priest had been assigned to the area, and although the number of Catholics fluctuated (recorded at 379 in 1967, mainly Chinese migrant workers who often returned to China), a Capuchin friar was assigned to Sungai Selan in 1912, until 1918 when shifts in the tin mining industry resulted in a relocation of the mission to Pangkal Pinang. During this period, a beriberi outbreak in 1883 amongst Chinese migrant workers killed half of the congregation. Tjung Tin Jan
Mr. Tjung Tin Jan (9 February 1919 – February 1994) or Jani Arsadjaja was an Indonesian politician and lawyer of Chinese Indonesian origin. Early life and education Tjung was born in Sungai Selan, part of what is today Central Bangka Regency of Bangka Island, then part of the Dutch East Indies, on 9 February 1919. He studied at a ''Recht Hogeschool'' in Batavia, before heading to the Netherlands to study law in the Leiden University, and he received a Master of Laws degree. Career After Tjung returned to the Indies, he had worked at a telephone company and became a lawyer before being appointed as a deputy prosecutor in Pangkal Pinang's court. He also founded, and later led, the Bangka branch of the Chinese Association. Additionally, he acted as a legal adviser to a Chinese school in Pangkal Pinang. Crescent Star Party (Indonesia)
The Crescent Star Party ( id, Partai Bulan Bintang) is a political party in Indonesia. History The party's origins go back to the banning of the Islamic Masyumi Party by Sukarno in 1960. After the ban, supporters and followers of the party established the Crescent Star Family (''Keluarga Bulan Bintang'') to continue to press for the implementation of Sharia law and Islamic teaching in Indonesia. Following the fall of Sukarno and the transition to the New Order in which Suharto came to power, members of the organization wanted to revive the Masyumi Party, but this was not allowed by the new regime. In the 1970s, in a meeting in Malang, a new party called Parmusi (''Partai Muslimin Indonesia'', Muslim Party of Indonesia) was formed. It came fourth in the 1971 legislative elections. Yusril Ihza Mahendra
Yusril Ihza Mahendra (born 5 February 1956) is an Indonesian lawyer, politician and academic, who is currently serving as the leader of the Crescent Star Party (PBB) since 2015. Previously, he served as the leader of the PBB from 1998 until 2005, Minister of Justice and Human Rights from 2004 until 2007, and member of the People's Representative Council from 1999 until 2009. Born on 5 February 1956, he attended the University of Indonesia. Graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy. He would go on to work as a speechwriter for presidents Suharto and B. J. Habibie. Erzaldi Rosman Djohan (born 31 October 1969) is an Indonesian politician who has served as the Governor of Bangka-Belitung Islands since 2017 to 2022. Prior to becoming governor, he was elected two times as the regent of Central Bangka Regency. Early life and education Djohan was born on 31 October 1969 in Pangkal Pinang (then part of South Sumatra province) from Rosman Djohan and Melati.
