Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Olmsted County. Located on rolling bluffs on the Zumbro River's south fork in Southeast Minnesota, the city is the home and birthplace of the renowned Mayo Clinic. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 121,395, making it Minnesota's third-largest city. The Rochester metropolitan area, which also includes the nearby rural agricultural areas, has a population of 226,329. William Worrall Mayo
William Worrall Mayo (May 31, 1819 – March 6, 1911) was a British-American medical doctor and chemist. He is best known for establishing the private medical practice that later evolved into the Mayo Clinic. He was a descendant of a famous English chemist, John Mayow. His sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, established a joint medical practice in Rochester in the U.S. state of Minnesota in the 1880s. Early life William Worrall Mayo was born in Eccles, Lancashire, England, now part of Salford, and studied science in Manchester under John Dalton, the chemist and physicist responsible for formulating the modern atomic theory of matter and devising a table of relative atomic weights. Mayo left for the U.S. in 1846. His first work in his new country was as a pharmacist at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, though he soon moved westward. Kerry Conley
Kerry Ellsworth Conley (1 September 1866 – 5 March 1924) was Minnesota businessman, civic leader, and politician. Together with his brother Fred, they founded the Conley Camera Company in Spring Valley, Minnesota at 510 Main Street. The brothers were childhood friends with Richard Warren Sears, Richard Sears, and the company secured a contract to sell cameras through Sears, Roebuck, Inc. catalogs. To help fill the increased demand, as well as being able to advertised the cameras as "Made in Rochester" in an attempt to associate their cameras with Kodak, they moved the business to Rochester, Minnesota in 1904 and purchased a factory. The production soon expanded and they built a larger factory in 1910. The Conley brothers eventually sold their company to Sears. Barbara Katherine Cegavske (née Jewson; born August 27, 1951) is an American businesswoman and politician, who is the former Secretary of State of Nevada from 2015 to 2023. She was a Republican member of the Nevada Senate, representing Clark County District 8map from 2002 to 2014. Previously, she served in the Nevada Assembly from 1996 to 2001. Marshall A. Burt (born May 6, 1976) is an American politician who served in the Wyoming House of Representatives. A member of the Libertarian Party, Burt represented the 39th district from 2021 to 2023. Burt is the first Libertarian candidate to be elected to a state legislature since Steve Vaillancourt in 2000, and the first third-party candidate elected to the Wyoming Legislature in over 100 years. Walter Burdick (April 23, 1893 – March 7, 1982) was an American farmer and politician. Burdick was born in Viola Township, Olmsted County, Minnesota. He went to the Minneapolis public schools. Burdick lived in Rochester, Minnesota, with his wife and family and was a farmer. Harry Andrew Blackmun (November 12, 1908 – March 4, 1999) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1970 to 1994. Appointed by Republican President Richard Nixon, Blackmun ultimately became one of the most liberal justices on the Court. He is best known as the author of the Court's opinion in ''Roe v. Wade.'' Adolph Biermann (November 19, 1842 – January 5, 1914) was an American farmer and politician. Biography Born in Christiana, Norway, Biermann emigrated to the United States in 1862. He first settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and served in the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, during the American Civil War, until 1865. He was involved in the Battle of Perryville and Battle of Stones River. In 1866, he moved to Rochester, Minnesota, worked as a bookkeeper and settled on a farm. In 1874, Biermann was elected Auditor of Olmsted County, Minnesota. Biermann ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1883, receiving about 43% of the vote. He also ran for Minnesota Secretary of State, and the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat losing the elections.
