Maribor
Maribor ( , , , ; also known by other #Name, historical names) is the second-largest city in Slovenia and the largest city of the traditional region of Styria (Slovenia), Lower Styria. It is also the seat of the City Municipality of Maribor, the seat of the Drava Statistical Region, Drava statistical region and the Eastern Slovenia region. Maribor is also the economic, administrative, educational, and cultural centre of eastern Slovenia. Maribor was first mentioned as a castle in 1164, as a settlement in 1209, and as a city in 1254. Like most Slovene Lands, Slovene ethnic territory, Maribor was under Habsburg monarchy, Habsburg rule until 1918, when Rudolf Maister and his men secured the city for the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which then joined the Kingdom of Serbia to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Jure Ivanušič (born 24 March 1973 in Maribor) is a Slovene theatre and film actor, director, playwright, concert pianist, composer, chansonnier and translator. He studied drama at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television and piano at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. Luka Krajnc (born 19 September 1994) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Hannover 96. Club career Krajnc began his football career at the age of eight when his father took him on a trial with the Slovenian football club Maribor. He signed his first professional contract with Maribor at the age of 16 and played for the main squad in a couple of friendly matches. On 29 May 2011, he played his first and only 1. Anton Korošec
Anton Korošec (, ; 12 May 1872 – 14 December 1940) was a Yugoslav politician, a prominent member of the conservative People's Party, a Roman Catholic priest and a noted orator. Early life Korošec was born in Biserjane (then Duchy of Styria, Austria-Hungary, now part of Slovenia) and went to school in Ptuj and in Maribor. He studied theology and was ordained as a priest in 1895. He completed his education with a doctorate in theology from the University of Graz in 1905. He was friends with Janez Evangelist Krek and adopted his political views. Katja Koren
Katja Koren Miklavec (born 6 August 1975) is a former Slovenian alpine skier. Born in Maribor, she won a bronze medal in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. She took her sole World Cup win at the age of 18 in a Super-G in Flachau in December 1993, taking victory from a bib number of 66, a few days after Markus Foser had won at Val Gardena with the same start number. Koren was the first woman to take an Alpine Ski World Cup win for Slovenia, a couple of days after Jure Košir became the first man to win a World Cup race for Slovenia as an independent nation in Madonna di Campiglio. Jana Kolarič
Jana Kolarič (born 17 September 1954) is a Slovene author and translator. She is the author of plays and novels for both children and adults, and has been recognised as an exceptional artist by the Ministry of Culture. She has won a number of literary awards. Career Jana Kolarič was born on 17 September 1954 in Maribor, where she attended elementary and secondary school. In 1979 she completed her AGRF (''Akademija za Gledališče, Radio, Film'') course in Ljubljana with a degree in film and TV directing. Edvard Kocbek () (27 September 1904 – 3 November 1981) was a Slovenian poet, writer, essayist, translation, translator, member of Christian Socialists in the Liberation Front of the Slovene Nation and Slovene Partisans. Aleksander Knavs (born 5 December 1975) is a Slovenian retired football defender. Club career Knavs was born in Maribor and started his professional career playing at the club Olimpija from the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana in 1993. He played for Olimpija until June 1997 and went on to move abroad by signing with Austrian club Tirol Innsbruck after being noticed by Kurt Jara, the club's manager at the time. Playing for Olimpija, Knavs appeared in 70 domestic league matches and scored five goals for the club in the league. He also won the Slovenian championship twice with the club, in 1994 and 1995. Matjaž Kek (born 9 September 1961) is a Slovenian professional football manager and former player who is the manager of the Slovenia national team. Playing career Kek started his career at his home club NK Maribor, before moving to another Maribor-based team, Železničar Maribor. In 1980, he returned to Maribor. In 1985 he joined the Austrian club Spittal/Drau, where he stayed for three seasons. Kek then transferred to another Austrian club, GAK of the Austrian Bundesliga where he played for seven years.
