Banská Bystrica
Banská Bystrica (, also known by other alternative names) is a middle-sized town in central Slovakia, located on the Hron River in a long and wide valley encircled by the mountain chains of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. With approximately 76,000 inhabitants, Banská Bystrica is the sixth most populous municipality in Slovakia. The present-day town was founded by German settlers during the Middle Ages (as part of the ''Ostsiedlung''), however it was built upon a former Slavic/ Slovakian settlement. It obtained the municipal privileges of a free royal town of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1255. The copper mining town acquired its present picturesque look in the late Middle Ages when the prosperous burghers built its central churches, mansions, and fortifications. Anastasiya Kuzmina
Anastasiya Vladimirovna Kuzmina ( sk, Anastasia Kuzminová, russian: Анастасия Владимировна Кузьмина; née Shipulina; born 28 August 1984) is a retired Russian-born Slovak biathlete. Career Kuzmina represented Slovakia from December 2008 and won the silver medal two months later in mass start at the 2009 Biathlon World Championships in Pyeongchang. She won a gold medal in the 7.5 km sprint and a silver medal in the 10 km pursuit at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Richard Zedník
Richard Zedník (born 6 January 1976) is a Slovak former professional ice hockey winger. He had a 15-year career in the National Hockey League (NHL), playing for the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Florida Panthers. Peter Tomka
Peter Tomka (born 1 June 1956) is a Slovak judge of the International Court of Justice. Prior to his election to the ICJ in 2003, Tomka was a Slovak diplomat. Early life and education He was born in Banská Bystrica, Czechoslovakia. He earned LLM and PhD degrees from Charles University in Prague in 1979 and 1985 respectively. In addition, he has also undertaken studies at the Faculty of International Law and International Relations in Kyiv, Ukraine, at the Institut du droit de la paix et du développement in Nice, France, at the Institute of International Public Law and International Relations in Thessaloniki, Greece, and The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands. Tomáš Surový (born September 24, 1981) is a Slovak professional ice hockey left winger currently playing for Slovan Bratislava of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Playing career As a youth, Surový played in the 1995 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Bratislava. Surový was drafted in the fourth round, 120th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He called-up from Pittsburgh's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Penguins, in December 2005, where he earned the nickname "Killer" after jumping to Sidney Crosby's defence in a game against the Ottawa Senators. Radovan Sloboda ( in Banská Bystrica) is a Slovak politician, an entrepreneur and a sports manager. He has been a Member of National Council of The Slovak Republic since 2020. He represents a political party, Freedom and Solidarity. He is also a member of Council of Slovak Tennis Association and the chairman of Tennis Club of Baseline Banská Bystrica. Haviva Reik
Haviva Reik (alternately Haviva Reick, Havivah Reich, Chaviva Reiková or Chaviva Reich) (22 June 1914 – 20 November 1944) was one of 32 or 33 parachutists sent by the Jewish Agency and Britain's MI9 on military missions in Nazi-occupied Europe. Reik went to Slovakia in fall 1944 and worked with local Jewish people to resist the German occupation there. She established a camp for Russian prisoners of war who had escaped, and helped organize a Jewish resistance unit. The Germans organized forces to put down the Jewish resistance, and Reik and the other parachutists escaped with about 40 local Jews into the mountains. In November 1944, however, Reik and the other parachutists were captured, killed, and buried in a mass grave. Hana Ponická
Hana Ponická (July 15, 1922 Halič, Czechoslovakia – August 21, 2007 Banská Bystrica, Slovakia) was a Slovak writer and former anti-Communist dissident. She opposed the Communist government of the former Czechoslovakia. Ponická signed the Charter 77 human rights manifesto in 1977. Charter 77 was inspired by Václav Havel, a Czech dissident and playwright who later became president of the Czech Republic after the breakup of Czechoslovakia. Ponická was arrested in August 1989 for observing the anniversary of the crushing of Czechoslovakia's democracy movement by the Warsaw Pact in 1968. She was released from jail three months later. Ponická helped found the Christian Democratic Movement, a major Slovak political party, following the collapse of Communism in Czechoslovakia at the end of 1989. Jana Plauchová (born 8 September 1987) is a Slovak astrobiologist and sci-fi writer. She published four novels. Biography Jana Plauchová was born on 8 September 1987 in Banská Bystrica, where she was educated at the local grammar school. She became interested in space and astronautics as a 15-year-old, following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Plauchová studied biology at the Matej Bel University and obtained a master's degree in Molecular biology from the Comenius University, graduating in 2012. She published her first novel ''Zero Kelvin'' right after graduation. As of 2023, Plauchová works as a researcher at the Maximilián Hell Planetarium and Observatory in Žiar nad Hronom. Vladimír Országh (born May 24, 1977) is a Slovak former professional ice hockey player. Now he is head coach of HC Slovan Bratislava and assistant coach of Craig Ramsay at the Slovak representation. Playing career As a youth, Országh played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Poprad. Országh was drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1995 by the New York Islanders in the fifth round (106th overall) and he has been playing in the NHL since 1997. From 1997 through to 2000, Vladimír Országh was attempting to crack the New York Islanders line-up, as he had a stint of 34 games in the NHL over those three years, tallying a total of five points (3 goals and 2 assists).
